I really think this comes down to personal choice

I'm not sure that everyone gets an opportunity to comparison-shop.

In this country, aside from family and pressures, everyone nominally has a choice... although there are some disadvantages to not believing the same as the prevalent views. Since I don't automatically root for the 'winning' (e.g. largest) team, I guess I choose to have some personal disadvantages.

That's a very big aside. Well educated urban people are more likely to be exposed meaningfully to multiple belief systems.

I suppose you've seen a lot of this sort of pressure back in your home stomping grounds. :( A lot of people suffer.

Not especially, I just hear about it from friends who escaped it.
