Why the holiday shopping season happens earlier every year

It's the same reason that the early bird catches the worm, or why trees get taller and broader. If you are on the spot first and get that tasty meal, you are more likely to succeed. If your ability is to out-compete the other trees in capturing the flow of sunlight, then taller and broader trees are more successful, and have more offspring. In effect, holiday retailers try to get the jump on the flow of money from consumers.

This is a simple organizing effect that comes from the way systems function in a flow.

Another strategy is the breadth of products available - once you have captured a thread from the flow, you will try to offer them as much variety as you can to try to get them to exhaust their resources before they leave. This is like the broad-leafed plants may out-compete conifers in some situations, the big cat gets the meal by crowding out the little cat, and is why supermarkets, hypermarkets, department stores and amazon.com exist.

It's also why the big corporations and two big parties run our government, not the little businesses and individual human beings.
