Today is the tenth anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa, an impoverished woman (in monetary terms, at least) who dedicated her life to helping the poorest people of Calcutta and beyond.

But, as one Times reader wrote, among all the celebrations for Diana's life did I miss the commemorations for that of Mother Teresa?

No, because the occasion has ( Read more... )

That was a very short comment, I'm afraid: a combination of DragonCon burnout, jetlag and a cold. I'll try to get together the energy to post about DragonCon; I had a great time. :)

But to ignore Mother Teresa's life over Diana's says everything about the shallowness of our culture.

And it's scary how how few years it's taken for our culture to become as shallow as it is. People have always loved a celebrity it's true, but not to this idolatrous extent. It seems the less you have to offer, the more people want to know about you.

Oh yes, that trio of ladies is just the one I'd pick for especial criticism. I once used Lindsey '13 pairs of sunglasses because I'm worth it' Lohan (among others)as an example of society's unhealthy obsession with celebrity in a family service talk.

And it's just occurred to me, I didn't notice a single programme in the Radio Times last night about Mother Teresa. Disgraceful.

Opaline,
Thank-you for reminding us of this marvellous woman's life, and death ten years ago...
I remember there was much talk about the Catholic Church canonising her when she died, for all her lifetime of good deeds and the amazing legacy she left behind, what is happening about that, I wonder ?...

We will never see Princes Diana canonised for being the People's Princess, that's for sure !!

LOL! No, we certainly won't, thank goodness! Saint Diana - can you imagine?

Mother Teresa has so far been beatified (from the Latin for 'blessed'), which is a kind of half-way house to canonisation. There are still people campaigning for her canonisation though.

Thanks for the reminder, Opaline. I wouldn't have known, either, that it's been 10 years since Mother Teresa died. She was a great soul.

I do think Diana would be a candidate for sainthood among marketing and PR people, though. Like Marilyn Monroe's, her image sells newspapers and magazines and boosts television ratings. If only for that reason, she won't be forgotten.

You're right there! And let's face it, had she had a face like Camilla's, the shallow media wouldn't think twice about her now. Just as, if Camilla had been like Diana, they'd be quite happy for her to have the title of 'Queen' when Charles ascends the throne, instead of this nonsense about her being 'consort' or whatever.
