Some thoughts on Torchwood and Russell T...  (turn away if you're easily offended)

Put John Barrowman in a red uniform, give him a Cary Grant-style accent and it could have been that indestructible and indispensable member of Spectrum.  Come to think of it, Spectrum's job was to deal with ( Read more... )

Indeed, George Lucas didn't come up with it. Take the 'coincidence' in Jane Eyre with St.John and his sisters being Jane's cousins (which I mention since it has just finished airing here). Then there's Woman in White with the half-sister link. I'm sure if I sat and thought about it long enough I'd come up with quite a few. I suppose what used to be great drama a hundred to two hundred years ago, is now cliche.

I'm glad you mentioned the fact you have no idea what I'm talking about. It's too easy to forget that there isn't one universal culture, even in this day and age. And I, like you, am glad for it. I like that I can go to another country and experience something different. I don't understand Brits, who, say, go to Spain, and insist on eating 'English' food (whatever that is!), or take HP (brown) sauce with them (seriously, it happens). Some go to hot countries simply for the sun and never leave the pool. Then there are those who can't be bothered to learn even the most basic words and polite expressions in the language of the country they're visiting. The British are particularly bad at all these things.

As for Steve Irwin, if it hadn't been for Jack begging me to take him to see his film at the cinema, I'd have been in the same boat as you (no pun intended, yet again)!

Incidentally, in case you're wondering, Torchwood is a spin-off of Doctor Who (of which it's also an anagram). Russell T Davies is the head writer and executive produceer of the latest two series of Doctor Who and creator of Torchwood. Of course. I'm assuming you know who Doctor Who is! ;)

I think Victor Hugo is possibly the worst culprit - pretty well all of his characters are related to each other by blood or coincidence.

The coincidences in Les Miserables were fun to spot, but the ones in Notre Dame de Paris have me groaning out loud at times!
