Yay, we're home! It's fun to visit, but always lovely to come home to sleep in one's own bed. The trip was nice, considering it started with a funeral and ended with the car breaking down.
The funeral went as well as can be expected. My brother is holding up pretty well, but I still worry about him. Now is the time that he's going to need folks, now that he's getting back to a 'normal' routine and has to come home to an empty house. I am happy to report that the simaese kitten came back last Tuesday night, a week after she slipped out of the house. That's something, anyway.
My birthday was nice, a bit low-key since we'd arrived in VA at 3:30am that morning. We lounged around the house, then went out to dinner with Alan's mom, his brother and sister-in-law. Lots of oysters, yum! Alan's mom baked my cake, yummy lemon with white chocolate frosting.
The rest of the week was spent visiting with Alan's family, and some shopping. We had a cookout on the 4th, saw some local fireworks, then walked out to the neighbor's yard around 9:30pm and watched the fireworks from Dalgren across the Potomac River. I got to go to G Street Fabrics at Potomac Mills on Thursday. My god, the fabric and trims..I barely scratched the surface. I will be going back! We also went to Ikea, but didn't buy much. No sense it it, since we have one here in Atlanta.
Saturday we planned to go to the Westmorland Berry farm, finish packing, then leave around 6pm to head home. Well, that's what we planned, anyway. The alternator had other plans. It went out on the way to the berry farm. We were lucky in that we had lots of help getting to first one garage, then on to the one that was ultimately able to fix the car. It was better to have it happen during the day, than later when we were on the interstate, in the middle of nowhere, with the dogs and all our stuff. We were able to have dinner with Alan's mom, then left around 7pm.
We made it home around 4:30am Sunday/yesterday morning. Made the 600 mile trip in 9 1/2 hours, including 3 short stops. It was cooler, there was no traffic, and the dogs slept after it got dark. Next time we try that, tho, I'd prefer us to sleep later in the day before we start out, so we don't get so tired.
All in all, I'm glad we went, but I'm happy to be home. How I have the monthly doll meet up to look forward to this Sunday. I have some new girls to show off. :)
