  • Here is an abandoned house my girlfriend and I came across while out cruising the country roads in NE Iowa.
  • It was a very picturesque location, with a little creek meandering behind it.

This little cottage was completely made of limestone which is very plentiful here in NE Iowa. We crawled through the door here.

Here is a view right inside the front door.  Nice old wood burning stove along with a more modern - 60's?- stove.  Notice the pots and pans on the stove.  The bag that sits on the stove had what appeared to be concrete in it. Not sure.

Another view of the kitchen taken from outside looking in the window. Notice the coat hanging there.

Looking in the window near the back.

The sun was beginning to set.  I love the colors in this house.  Here is the living room.  There is some wallpaper on the side of the room not pictured.  There was also a woodburning stove here, too. It must have been cozy back in the day. The couch was covered in leather.  Very well made and would be beautiful if restored.

Here is the bedroom.  Pretty pink chenille spread.  Do you just get up and walk away one day, never to return?

I did brave the stairs.  They were pretty solid.  Nothing up there but animal poo. Amy checked the pockets of the coat.  Nothing in the pockets but a hankie.  Actually there was nothing really "personal" here, i.e. mail, letters, etc. to indicate exactly who lived here, but what they left behind told many stories.

Looking in the basement.  Pretty solid construction.  The washtub was in the corner of the bedroom.

There were many small barns and outbuildings in the back of this cottage. Lots of items pertaining to horses; bridles, bits, shoes and other misc. farm machinery.  I think this place was abandoned in the 1960's.  There was also a VERY old log cabin on this property.  Maybe that is what this family lived in when they first settled.  I didn't see anything belong to a woman.  We have lots of bachelor farmers around this area. Maybe?  This was not the area to be asking around either.  Where we were was pretty much "hillbilly" way out in the sticks.  People like their shotguns here and I wouldn't want to be on the other end of one. Seriously.
I do make it a point to leave these sights undisturbed as much as possible.  I would never dare take anything.  Now that would be bad karma.
