"GOD DAMNIT LUFFY!" Garp roared as a eight-month-old Luffy through his bowl of vegetables clear across the tiny living room. The bowl smashed on the wood floor, grinding mashed peas and steamed carrots onto the one rug in the tiny shack. The baby giggled and slapped his hands on the tray of his highchair as his grandfather picked up the rubble.
Garp steamed as he piled everything into one hand, veins throbbing all over his forehead. But it wasn't just because of Luffy, oh no. It was his own son, his own son that dumped the kid on his lap a couple of weeks ago. And Garp couldn't leave him at Dadan's, either, for several reasons, the most important being--
"MA-MA!" Luffy wailed and hiccuped from having giggled so hard earlier.
"No, no meat," Garp panted and held up his pile of veggies and clay chips. "You need to eat vegetables. It's a fact of life!"
Luffy blew a raspberry and continued to cry for meat.
"Oi, quiet!" Garp shouted. But Luffy cried harder and smashed his little fists against his tray. Garp grumbled and went into the thee-foot long kitchen and threw the vegetable-clay mess in the trash and took out a carrot from the food bin. As he peeled the new carrot, his brain whirred to get the kid to eat something that grew out of the ground. Sure, he hated vegetables himself, but carrots weren't too bad.
"Hmm, sounds familiar," he muttered to himself. He had been humming a random tune as he was peeling. "Something...something...vegetables...something...I'd jump up and down a-a-and hope you'd toss me a carrot--WAIT, THAT'S IT! LUFFY!"
Luffy stifled his cries. His grandfather sauntered back into the living room with a peeled carrot in one hand and some peas in the other. Luffy frowned and readied his tears. But before he could cry Garp started singing:
I'm gonna be 'round, my vegetables
I'm gonna chow down, my vegetables
I--love you MOST of all
My favorite ve-ga-tables.
Luffy squeeled with joy as the aging man hopped around singing in his gravely voice while popping a couple of peas. He poured the rest of the peas on Luffy's tray, and the baby ate them without thinking as he watched his grandfather sing.
If-you-brought a great big BAG of them home
I'd jump up-and-down and hope you'd toss me a ca-rrot
Garp bit off half of his carrot and munched on it, singing as he did, and offered the other half to Luffy, thinking his grandson would just grate the edges of the carrot with his three and a half teeth.
Instead, Luffy chomped down on his very first cold, hard carrot.
It would be about a day before Garp got his hearing back, and even then his hearing was never really quite the same after the 'carrot incident'.
