Anon can't remember where in the meme, but a comment she saw in the last week or so brought this to mind. Is there anything in fanfic that squicks you...but not always? If so, what is it and why do you think it's different?
Maybe you dislike Chopper pairings unless it's someone his own age, or another sentient animal, or something else entirely. Maybe certain tropes in slash fic annoy you 99% of the time, or maybe you don't even like slash but find yourself shipping a same-sex pairing anyway. Maybe you can't stand rape/recovery plots unless the perpetrator gets maimed in the end - or maybe you don't like "neat" endings to that sort of thing. Maybe you don't like mpreg but secretly think (character) would be a great mom. Anything! Curious anon is curious.
Personally, I'm one of the few people sneaking around that ships Brook and Yorki. I ship it hard...but with any other characters under any other circumstances, captain/crew (or other authority figure) pairings make me uncomfortable. If I had to guess why this one's an exception for me, it'd be the canon evidence that Brook was (at least internally) the strongest person on that entire ship, poor Yorki included. That and I have a weakness for goofy middle-aged characters that act like a married couple, whether I end up shipping it or not.

Hmmm... I don't know if this counts, but there are certain pairings I really, really don't like, but for some reason I like them together if it's a part of one huge orgy. O_o
I'm sorry if you wanted a serious discussion and I just came waltzing in and started talking about orgies. Heh...

Haha, no it doesn't have to be serious. That's exactly the sort of thing I was looking for anyway. :) Come to think of it, I'm neither particularly for or against orgy-fic in principle, but I think I may be the same way. Maybe the things that bother me are just harder to notice if everybody is getting laid equally, lol.

Agreed. I somehow have zero problem with alot of the pairings I hate if everyone in the crew is simultaneously getting laid... But that probably has more to do with the fact that I hate certain dynamics as romantic relationships, but I already love the dynamics of the crew, and if its an orgy, no one has to change!

I'll read a great many things I don't usually like for the sake of my favourite character written in-character by someone with a decent grasp of prose. (It really shouldn't be so hard to find that when your favourite char is the lead... ;_; )

Any OOC fandom characterization tendencies that stand out in your mind? I've never written Luffy before and worry I'd be terrible at it if I ever try. Help me, Luffy fans! :(

I've been thinking about this for the last 24 hours. Kind of a difficult question because he is SO hard to pin down and that is in a way kind of the point. I know at least that's why I like him, because he's completely abnormal. :)
The thing that's the killer for me I think is very cutesy characterisation or when he is shown breaking down in h/c over things that really, really, really from what we've seen in canon, he would shrug off or be Manly about, and the writer forgets that he's a monster, even if a happy, slightly dumbass monster, and write him like a cute/naive/simple little kid.
Less annoying but easily done is getting that balance off where he's either too dumb (because occasionally in canon he does actually make quite complex connections) or too normalised. But honestly I'll take that happily if anyone's willing to write him. It just kind of damages me when he's crying over a papercut.
The most fic with him that I see is on ff.net and *cough* perhaps not written all that well and it may just be that a lot of the fandom on lj isn't interested in him or thinks he's impossible to write. I never know if I'm getting him remotely right when I write him so I guess I understand why people avoid his POV so much.
Um. Does any of that make sense? I'm not sure if this is remotely helpful here.

I really dislike Chopper porn... unless he's topping Zoro, then I'm all squees and sparkly eyes. I think it could be a combination of me loving their canon relationship and really enjoying when a weaker/younger/less experienced etc. character is the stronger character's equal in bed. And I've had some pretty bad experiences with Chopper het, and it just feels most natural to pair him with Zoro in a yaoi relationship, for some reason.
I'm also experiencing the complete opposite of what you wondered about with a certain pairing. I'm one of those who still like Sanji and Zoro together in that "you annoy me and turn me on and you know I'd die for you, right, you bastard?" way. Sanji/Zoro sex is lots of fun, hand-jobs, blow-jobs, Sanji fucking Zoro... but as soon as Sanji gets something up his butt, my metaphorical wood goes instant noodle on me. This is one thing I can't figure out. No matter how in character they both are, bottom-Sanji just turns me off. I don't have this problem with any other pairing. I'm guessing that maybe I was traumatized (haha, exaggerating, me?) by some really ooc bottom-Sanji fic when I was still a newborn One Piece fan.
I might think of something else later, but the things that squick me usually squick me all the time.

Old discussion is old, and this comment is longer than I h ad planned.
I don't really read Chopper porn, but I know I've read one crack fic with him topping Zoro, and I enjoyed it! I like bottom-Zoro in general, but the inexperienced/experienced bit is definitely a factor. Or maybe it's because I laugh over the idea of Zoro getting topped by cuteness personified. Succumb to those sparkly eyes!
I know the feeling of not really being into bottom-Sanji (why does that sound like an innuendo). And yeah, I'm not entirely sure if it's a characterization thing or something else. It's definitely a part of it, but I'm not sure how much it affects my "metaphorical wood." If he's IC, I can tolerate him bottoming and will greatly appreciate the author's ability to "make" me read what I typically won't, but I derive no real enjoyment out of the porn unless they switch (TMI - it's like mental foreplay). Maybe I just like thinking that I'm ~*special*~ for going against the majority? The lack of it makes me want it even more, ahaha. Sometimes I curse my preference since it's hard to find.
I'm pretty happy to see that I'm not as ~*special*~ as I thought I was though. Seeing other anons that like the pairing in this specific order or just bottom-Zoro makes me feel like less of an "outsider." I'm definitely aware that pairing order doesn't matter or make much sense because x is x and y is y regardless of who is doing whom, but in fiction it's a little harder to tell. Possibly horrible examples since I fail at rhetoric: I don't necessarily like Chopper/Robin, but I'm not going to assume that its proponents approve of real-life bestiality. Somewhat similarly, I don't think men and women have defined sexual roles, even if I get a kick out of a specific variation of a pairing. I suppose it could say something about us psychologically, but I wouldn't know. Man, that'd be an interesting paper topic if I were a psychology major, assuming that a fandom's pairing preferences is a viable topic.
In summary: we like what we like, even if it doesn't make sense! ...Heck, did I even make sense?

It feels good to have someone to be ~*special*~ with!
"Sometimes I curse my preference since it's hard to find." So do I. All the time. I'm horribly jealous of the people who think bottom-Sanji is hot. And believe me, I've tried to think he's hot, but I just... don't. A strange, strange thing, this, especially since I normally don't care.

I generally don't like pregnancy fic. Most preg-fics seem to be written by little girls who don't really understand pregnancy and babies. And I usually prefer reading about the characters I like more or less as they are in canon, something not many writers manage to pull off in preg-fic.
The exception to this is fic where a Manly Man is mpregged or turned into woman and then knocked up. Not slender, pretty guys, and only a few Manly Men work for some reason. But with the right Manly Man and if handled by a good writer/artist, the whole pregnancy thing suddenly becomes interesting and amazing and sexy. It's a kink of mine that probably started with all those adorable photos of muscular men holding tiny babies and, as everything else, later became perverted as I discovered the internet. Damn internet...

Crying girly uke. I mean, when a MANLY man is turned into a whim and cries and behaves like a girl (not even a woman, but a girl) and only because the writer makes him uke. But I must say I enjoyed few intersting fics with crying uke, but those were simply well executed.

500% omg totally agreed. My OTP is Zoro/Sanji, and that gets a lot of shit for having uke Sanji, but EWWWWWWWWW I despise those fics with a burning passion. I mean, I like them cause they AREN'T the annoying stereotypical uke seme, they're more like equals who duke it out. I mean, if they aren't gonna fight for it, might as well write some other pairing. (plus, the whole point of pairing Sanji with a boy instead of a girl is that he would never challenge a girl EVER whereas he could be totally dom (or at least want to be dom) with a guy) and that was my mini rant.

My OTP is Zoro AND Sanji, no Slashes, because they are equal and could bang each other without setting who tops/bottoms. I love their dynamic as a crew, I lova their personalities and I sometimes feel bad for both characters and the poor writer for changing Sanji (mostly, cos he's easier to be ukefied) into a weeping girl.
And it even get worse, when uke gets pregnant with mysterious mpreg mreg fruit... TYhen I wonder, what was the writer thinking or maybe s/he really mistook uke for a girl.
