Can I just float the idea that we are in a variety of countries with different consent ages. It's not a great stretch for people to be prepared to pair someone who is just below and will be legal upon their next birthday. For some people that includes Luffy and Usopp on that borderline. But for some that includes Chopper. I am deeply disturbed at having the word "paedophilia" waved around the latter when I think there is no great difference between those situations in the perception of the shippers involved.

Still, for some people and countries, it really is (fictional) pedophilia. It goes both ways; people in countries where it is considered pedophilia should remember that it isn't in some countries, and people in countries where it is not considered pedophilia should remember that it is in others. But we all share the same Internet, so I vote that everyone should just read and write what they themselves enjoy and let others have their fun. No one is forcing me to read anything against my will, so I don't care what other people ship.

What people should keep in mind here is that they are not allowed to complain about it on this meme, no matter how offended they feel. It sucks that some people feel that they have the right to do that.

I feel that being accused of liking or condoning paedophilia because my frame of reference happens to be based around a lower age of consent harms and upsets me to a greater degree than it does the person who sees a prompt they don't like and goes "ew, squick".

Which is exactly why I'm saying the squicked people should just keep it to themselves. If people could just mind their own business, you wouldn't have to feel offended. Where I'm from, kids are allowed to have sex from the day they turn 15 (with other teenagers, at least, not adults, you'd have to be over 18 for that or the adult could get thrown in jail depending on the situation). I happily ship teens, which can get weird when I'm on an American based site where that's considered underage and is forbidden. But I'm aware that others view the world differently, know that I'm not doing anything wrong according to my country's laws, and just ignore the people who can't see things my way. It's not like they have any impact on my life, after all ( ... )

it is true, that people have no right to accuse people of that on this meme, at the very least.
I would like to propose however, since there will always be dumbasses on the internet (Isn't that kinda the rule of the internet?) that you learn who you should put stock in the opinion of, and who's comments you might want to just roll your eyes and go 'dumbass' under your breath. If you are getting genuinely hurt by Anonymous posts on the internet... maybe you have insecurities you need to work out.
If you were referring simply to the fact that they have no right to bash something which is perfectly legal in fiction, then say it with me now:
Pheh, dumbasses.

I think you should consider how weighted a term it is to wave around, and I'll keep this polite and not say what I want to say about your "insecurities" comment, except is it possible that people could start responding on here without personal judgements and slights?

I kinda want this thread and subject to die but I've been thinking here, and can I add to the thread in general that paedophile is real-world terminology that has a lot of baggage and implies criminality and real children coming to harm and can get you in a lot of trouble. The fandom, kink-fantasy-fictional term for adult->child relationship is I believe shota -- I say believe because it's not my kink and I'm not hugely knowledgeable here. There is nothing wrong with fantasy as people keep pointing out, but but BUT I think the same people trying to say that fantasy is ok are blurring the boundaries here with/accepting the use of the p word and it is more offensive than they realise?

I think the terms are shotacon (or something) when it's underage boys and lolicon when it's underage girls.

Since the OP is the one who started using "paedophilia", I don't think we should be blaming other anons for continuing to use it when answering.

The OP was continuing the discussion in the main meme where someone used the word in the bashing thread.

(another anon) But you know you're not a pedophile, right? So why let it bother you? I can understand that it would be annoying if people kept coming up to you to shout "OMG, STOP FUCKING CHILDREN YOU EVIL PEDOPHILE!!!" just because of a fic you wrote. But if they don't accuse you personally of being a pedophile, you have just as little right to feel offended over the fact that some people see a 28-year-old/15-year-old relationship as pedophilia because of their country's laws as they have to feel offended over the fact that you don't because of your country's laws. Some people will see it as pedophilia no matter what the view on the subject is where you live. They have no right to judge you because of the fanfiction you write, however, and they shouldn't. But I honestly feel that the people who do shouldn't have a place in your thoughts whatsoever. They're not worth your energy or time.

I personally want people to stop using that word right now because I have a physical reaction when I see it and it is making me sick to my stomach. We are dealing in terms of fiction and fantasy and a word that implies real world harm has no place. How can people not see that?

Whatever your purposes, please please please please stop trying to defend people's fictional fantasy using the word paedophile. PLEASE?

Simple solution to your problem = stop reading this thread. The OP was the one who started it, go shout at them instead. Unless you are the OP, of course, in which case I don't understand why you used it yourself in the first place if it affects you that badly.

This discussion continues from the meme, where the word was used first!

In fact, I was talking about people's different views on the real world phenomena. I can't go around saying "shota is forbidden in the real world", right? Because shota is a term for a fiction kink.

Also, just because someone sees 28-year-old/15-year-old relationships as pedophilia doesn't mean they automatically imply or even think that the one who wrote a fic about it is a pedophile. Then that would mean they also think that every person who writes rape fic is a rapist and that everyone who writes slash are gay.

I've seen that view expressed about rapefic kink tons, and I can't know what the person who used it first in the main thread was thinking. I guess they're not directly saying it but it still feels like there is an implication in the very use of the word itself.

I cannot believe that people do not care how much this terminology and discussion appalls me and I think I have had enough of this place about now. I shouldn't have opened my mouth and I cannot believe how horrible people are determined to be and how easily and thoughtlessly they throw this word around like it means nothing, just about a stupid fictional pairing and a bunch of fanfic and requests a few people don't like.
