Rhyme or Reason

May 18, 2008 21:17

The three and four year olds I spent my weekdays with have discovered the concept of rhyming. They are able to recognise it and point it out in various texts I read or recite. They discover words that rhyme, and rush over to tell me - or fit their rhyming words into sentences - one little not long three year old greeted me the other day with the announcement "theirs a pig under my wig!". They are so totally delighted by this discovery, this clever way that words fit together, like sets of nesting baskets, or Russian dolls. Its hard to say what impresses them more, this unexpected cunning of language, or their own ability to use it in their own jokes and stories.

And I remain totally delighted by them. By the end of this year, I will teach a couple of them what rhyme means for writing.
