Does anyone know anything about the ethics/environmental impact of silk? I think most of the time I do OK as regards my use of animal products; I avoid flesh food fairly strictly, for a start. Most of the eggs I eat are from hens I know, and most of the milk I drink is organic. I am fairly unrestrained with cheese, admittedly, and I take fish oil

And the western approach to moral ponderables seems to work around taking responsibility for our footprint.
The eastern approach is also concerned with what's at stake within you.
Personally, I'm sure that silk-worms feel pain. I'm also sure they experience pleasure. ...Or at least, craving & gratification. They do spend just about all of their lives eating & with some apparant enthusiasm. - You know, like boys...
When I wear silk I treat it as an exercise, lots of poor little buggers urgently ate themselves almost to death & then died (quite quickly - but probably not instantly) so that I could have something fantastic to wear.
And I respect that process & that sacrifice. For what its worth, I think its up to me to do what the silkworms can't.
ZheJiang Province - east coast of PRC, capital HangZhou historically holds the title (within PRC) for the best silk.
People working at all levels of manufacture & selling in that province have a higher reputation to maintain, higher status & more pride in what they do. They've had this for centuries. To the extent possible, this tends to attract the best people & the best from people.
