I have always disliked team sports. never really saw the point of organising events that deliberately foster aggression and competitiveness. But what do you do when a thirteen year old that never really asks for much, says "Alison you never watch me play soccer"? If you start going to his games its about the fact you love him; and nothing to do with soccer. And if you have the undeniable urge to yell instructions from the sidelines, and shriek when his team scores... well, its all about being supportive - right?
And when his mother wistfully expresses a desire to go to the Masters games in Adelaide with her (soccer) team... what can you do but persuade, support and bully until they get there - and be delighted when they win in their age group? But that's not about soccer... its about supporting people who are dear to me.
However, i am now confronted with a dirty little secret... last night when Australia kicked the winning goal against Uruguay last night, I cried. Real tears! Erm... does anyone know of any self help groups for this kind of thing?
