2011: A New Year Joins the Party!
Once again, basically the only reason I keep this journal outside of a smattering of people on my friends list, here is the end of year quiz. This would be year SEVEN of the quiz, which is kind of crazy. Yipes! Not quite sure how well this year will go since I've been negligent in my blogging and as a general rule kind of suck memory wise. Here's hoping!
1. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?
Most of my firsts this year were towards the end of the year, which I'm not sure shows a generally stagnant year or simply a lack of memory on my part. Just before my birthday I did stand up for the first time, right around the same time I started my first improv group. I joined the board for the Manitoba Association of Playwrights, although I am ashamed to admit I did not accomplish much in my tenure. I also joined a writer's group, the Sparkling Werewolves. Don't ask. Also, I grew my hair out longer than it's ever been, only to discover the it is very very wavy. Never again? Probably.
I went to Victoria for the Fringe, my first time in that city, and greatly enjoyed my time there. Upon my return I had decided that I was moving to Vancouver, so I quit my job, left my apartment and set out to move to a different city than my parents- Just before finding out that I had been cast in my first touring production (which was also my first gig with Prairie Theatre Exchange. Since I suddenly had some time to kill, I went to Vegas for the first time, missed a flight for the first time on the way back to Vancouver and took the train home from Vancouver to Winnipeg, another first. I also applied for and won the CAFF touring lottery. This all happened within the space of 3 months. So, a year of great change, although maybe a bit back loaded.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
From last year:
"1)Do standup before my 27th birthday
2)Be able to do side splits
3)Write TWO plays, one of which will be a full length play
4)Do a fringe tour
5)Either land a role with a major theater company or finally make my move out of the city."
By the numbers:
1- I did do this, as mentioned above, although I've yet to return. I talked to Brent Butt on-air on CJOB and asked if he had any advice for people like me who dabble in standup. His reply: Stop dabbling! Do or do not, there is no try. I've been working on new material, so I'll be back.
2- Not even close. Capoeira helped me get much more flexible, but having been away for as many months now, all that progress is gone.
3- I DID write two plays: When the Killer Mutant Lizards Attack and Clued-In, Clued-In being punched out in a fairly short amount of time while still being late. :P Neither were full length however, although the play I was thinking about when making this resolution was worked on, albeit in small spurts. I'll call this a split.
4-If one other city counts as a tour, then yes, as Victoria was a fun trip, albeit not particularly financially rewarding. Extra points for doing two plays in Victoria, Unequal Harvest and WTKMLA.
5-I actually did both, which is kind of funny. Does that count as one or two?
So, my score is, for those keeping track: Yes, No, Sorta, Maybe and Double Yes. Better than most could say. As for next year:
1. Attend the National Voice Intensive
2. Get a Five Star review for my Fringe show
3. Book at least one gig in Vancouver
4. Finish the year out of debt (not normally an issue, but with Fringe, Voice Intensive and no Joe-job, this could be harder than initially planned.)
5. Do the side splits. I don't know if I'll be able to get this done, but fuck it, no guts, no glory.
6. Finish a full length play and my YA novel idea, along with at least 5 short stories. I'm a writer when I bother to actually write, so let's get this done.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Oh, the babies. There are two new members of the greater Hirose clan, with my cousins Krista and Kimmy giving birth to Kira and Jacob respectively. My cousin Jen is also pregnant so expect her in this list for next year. Nobody else springs to mind, although with so many married friends I guess it's only a matter of time. Don't know if I can handle my friends having kids before I'm 30, but that being said, not sure I'll be able to handle it then.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
No funerals come to mind this year, which is always nice. Everyone is (as) healthy (as can be expected) and happy, so yay for that.
5. What countries did you visit?
Only made it to the states this year, with my journey to Vegas. Otherwise, I was in BC for about 2 months broken up, with a car ride one way and train ride the other through Alberta and Saskatchewan. Next year will be a bit crazier for this, so it's a good thing I've got an up to date passport.
6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
Last year I was hoping for continued support of my friends and family and some luck for touring. Support I've had, and am eternally grateful for it. Luck? Well, depends on how you see it. I try not to dwell on negative aspects of my career, but with a big tour coming up this year and no job to fall back on, I really have to make sure that my choices are both artistically and financially sound. 2011 is the year that I sink or swim as an actor and I'm very aware of that.
It's worth noting that in 2009 I was looking for some relationship stability and a choice between home and away. I had a relationship, and had finally made the choice to leave town, and couldn't keep both. This is one of those "right choice" moments that I'm certainly not going to stop thinking about any time soon. Getting called back to town for a job has only highlighted the whole ordeal. Hopefully the future will bear out a good resolution, because right now I'm kind of in limbo. Not a bad place to be, all things considered, but not where I would have ever guessed I'd be a few months ago.
7. What date from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Don't have a big mind for dates, although the realization in Vancouver that I would be moving there (sometime in September) was a big one, followed closely by giving my notice at work. Cutting ties is hard. Then there is my first day of travel over to Vancouver, where a killer snow storm almost took me off the road and had me following a long convoy doing 70 KM/H on a 110 KM/H highway. Good practice for the tour ahead I suppose.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Finally making a choice to leave, although as mentioned, this choice has played itself out quite strangely. Life is incredibly weird sometimes.
9. What was your biggest failure?
To be entirely honest, I'd have to point out the Victoria fringe which will be a lesson to me moving forward. Lack of audience, money and media attention hurt both of my shows and where I should have dug deep and pushed to really sell both shows instead I coasted and suffered accordingly. Winnipeg has spoiled me in many ways, but I'm ready to this summer. Fringe is fun, but it's also work and failure to take that seriously will mean I've spent a lot of money doing nothing.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Managed to avoid an serious aches and pains, although doing the kids show has been a steady wear and tear on my body that has taught me quite a bit about pacing myself. Helpful come the tour this summer.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Not much buying for me this year, although I did continue with my various collections, something I should really curb without a permanent residence and my parents planning to move in the near future. What is coming, and I've been avoiding really thinking about, is the inevitable downsizing. In an ideal world I'd have enough money to afford a place on an at least for-the-near-future basis, but that is really not a given in any way shape or form. Bridge I'll have to burn sooner rather than later unfortunately.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Joel and Amy got married, and so we partied like crazy. Shawn and Luke have made improv a real joy, and I'm pumped that we're going to be doing a Fringe show. Other than that, I guess I just want to shout out to my little cousins: John, Alex, Connor, Elijah, Joan, Zoe, Aaron and of course Riley, Kira and Jacob who I unfortunately didn't get to see as much as the rest. It's nice to know that the next generation of your family are becoming great people and fun to be around. I can screw up now- They've got it covered.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Funny how I pointed out my co-workers who had flown the coop last year, since I did it this one. I was actually part of a trend. I still know most of the people at Millennium but will in a year? Well, probably. The library doesn't really turn over that fast once you've been there a couple of years. Anyway, I'm rambling since no real names come to mind, other than people with grudges that they should let go. Life is too short for that shit people.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Rent, comics, games, booze. Tried going a month without drinking and succeeded. Should probably do so again to save money. Maybe a fringe tour without drinking? Dare I? Travel was also a big expense this year, with Victoria, Vancouver and Vegas in the mix. Good thing I didn't go to Japan as I was originally thinking, since I could have spent much, much more.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Fringe was a little too by-the-seat-of-my pants this year to be really exciting. I think the biggest one was the move and then booking the PTE gig.
16. What song will always remind you of 2010?
Probably something from the many, many Club St. B karaoke nights. John Marquez singing Teenage Dream was pretty awesome.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier, although I'm in an uncertain place. Still, it's the kind of uncertainty that one feels at the start of a journey and that is good.
ii. thinner or fatter? Fatter, but not by much. Haven't been able to hit the gym although the insane cardio which is the kids show has kept me from ballooning. It's Christmas time, so I'm giving myself a pass. That said, maybe I should cut down on the egg nog.
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer, due to lack of job for a month, bad Fringe payoff, TONS of cash in the Fringe this year and Vegas. Fingers crossed.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
From last year. "Writing and Travel always come to the front here. I should make note however that the two things I can NEVER do enough are 1)Donate blood and 2)Visit Grandma. She's my last grandparent and the rest of her time is precious. I shouldn't ever take that for granted." Ditto.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Procrastination is always a big one, but I think what really got me this year was the occasions that I stood in indecision when I didn't want to act. At least when I procrastinate, I usually do something else to kill time.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Christmas was more or less the same as usual, except I was back living with the family, so I did a ton more cooking than usual. We had a different crew over for Christmas day dinner, which was a bit unusual. Still, it was nice to hang out with the neighbors. Don't do it enough.
21. How will you be spending New Years?
New Years has been and gone and so I can actually say what happened which was different from what I expected to do. I started off the night at a friends house party, got very very drunk, and then headed out with my buddy Ben and a couple of ladies to check out a band at Osborne. The ladies left us around 2, so we headed to the Pyramid, then got some food and went home. A good new years.
22. Did you fall in love in 2010?
Yes, but maybe not enough.
23. How many one-night stands?
No, although anything that happened in Vegas stays in Vegas.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
The Office, Fringe, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire and more... I'm not lacking for TV.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I'm proud to say that this year hasn't had too much of the hate & spite, or that I've become less aware of it. Awareness = Personal Reality!
26. What was the best book you read?
This year I got a Kobo (something that I guess I should have put into the firsts list, but I don't wanna go up and edit again) which has let me go and read a whole bunch of new material and will hopefully keep me reading now that I no longer work at a library. The books that got me really all up ons for the device were the Millennium Trilogy, which I devoured pretty quickly. Not the best books, but certainly well worth reading (although the third and final book was kind of shitty). Here's hoping the lost 4th book is found and we get to see Lisbeth go to Canada! That being said, the books that I've actually really been enjoying have been the original Sherlock Holmes books by Arther Conan Doyle. I knew OF them and had seen the various movies and TV shows and whatnot, but never read the originals, being somewhat weary of older prose. Just can't get into most of it. Sherlock Holmes is different though, and I've found them both to be accessible and just plain fun. And thankfully, there's still a bunch more to read when I'm done the volumes I have loaded up. Yay for books!
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
I guess the biggest musical additions to my library this year came from the soundtrack to Scott Pilgrim and that fantastic song by Cee Lo Green, Fuck You. That was my warm up song while doing Unequal Harvest and will always have a special place in my heart.
28. What did you want and get?
Support. A choice made. A gig, and two tours. Some proof. And maybe, just maybe, a new start. Kind of. Sort of.
29. What did you want and not get?
Everything to go my way. Things that probably were not that good for me anyway. Progress without hard work.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Loved the comics, loved the film. Bought it on Blu-Ray, despite not actually owning a Blu-Ray player. SUCH IS MY LOVE!
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I honestly cannot remember a thing about my 27th birthday, which might be booze related but probably wasn't. I want to say Karaoke at Club St. B? Shit, who knows. I'm getting too old for this shit.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Doing better on tour, more critical acclaim. You know, actors, total attention whores.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
A lot of my clothes these days are grey, so I guess I'm sliding that way. Long sleeve undershirts. I'm turning into an adult or something.
34. What kept you sane?
Wonderful friends, fun video games, Dana and various other things that kept me from thinking too much. Guitar, booze, TV.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Mary Elizabeth Winstead really snuck up on me. Her Ramona really won me over. I heart pretty gurls.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The Winnipeg civic election, which sadly did not go my way. Fuck Sam Katz. Seriously.
37. Who did you miss?
Well, pretty much everybody while I was in Vancouver, but I got to see them again pretty quickly. I'm kind of being weaned off of Winnipeg. We'll see how it goes.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
Trying to remember who is new this year. Ray, one of my co-actors in Munsch is good people, think the tour should be pretty painless. Met some cool folks in Victoria and Vancouver, hopefully some of them will become good friends. Fingers crossed.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010:
Here's a late one: Nobody gets a good story by making good decisions. And who is to say what is and isn't a good decisions anyway, outside of the obvious?

A lot of my clothes these days are grey, so I guess I'm sliding that way. Long sleeve undershirts. I'm turning into an adult or something.
34. What kept you sane?
Wonderful friends, fun video games, Dana and various other things that kept me from thinking too much. Guitar, booze, TV.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Mary Elizabeth Winstead really snuck up on me. Her Ramona really won me over. I heart pretty gurls.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The Winnipeg civic election, which sadly did not go my way. Fuck Sam Katz. Seriously.
37. Who did you miss?
Well, pretty much everybody while I was in Vancouver, but I got to see them again pretty quickly. I'm kind of being weaned off of Winnipeg. We'll see how it goes.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
Trying to remember who is new this year. Ray, one of my co-actors in Munsch is good people, think the tour should be pretty painless. Met some cool folks in Victoria and Vancouver, hopefully some of them will become good friends. Fingers crossed.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010:
Here's a late one: Nobody gets a good story by making good decisions. And who is to say what is and isn't a good decisions anyway, outside of the obvious?
