Lily never stopped being surprised by how perceptive children can be. Everyone had been quiet and sad all day now, and Emmy had been quiet and sad too, but she didn't really understand why. Not long after they went to bed, Emmy started to cry, a low, whining wail, and Lily got out of bed in her nightgown and went to fetch her ( Read more... )

Eddie had been lost in his memories, but not so lost that his little girl didn't still come first. "It's all right Emmy," he said smoothing her hair back and kissing her forehead. "It's going to be all right." They'd survived it once before, and they'd survive it again.

Lily settled back down on her side, with Emmy's warm weight drawn in between her and Eddie.

"It is, kidlet," she said, quietly. "Sometimes, things like this happen."

"No," said Emmy, though it was a watery and less-than-firm no, unlike most of her declarations.

"Sometimes things like this just happen," said Eddie, "and you can't do anything to stop it even if you want to."

Emmy sighed and laid her head against Lily's chest, looking up at Eddie. Lily leaned down and kissed the top of Emmy's head.

"Sometimes people have to go away, kidlet..."

Emmy understood 'go away', but only in the context of the island, where go away didn't even have to mean forever. Death was something that was still alien to her.

"Uncle Chris is sad because his mummy has to go away, but he'll be okay again."

"No!"

"Oh, Emmy," said Lily, stroking the little girl's hair. "It'll be alright. Everyone will be okay."

Emmy let out a soft whimper and something that sounded almost like 'Gordon' if she'd been able to pronounce his name yet. Chris's father's grief was so raw that nobody was missing it, especially not someone like Emmy.

"It's going to be all right," Eddie promised her again, because it was the only thing he could promise. Somehow, in time, it was going to be all right again.

"Gordon's sad too, Em, but he'll be okay, eh?" Lily rubbed the tip of her nose against the top of Emmy's head. "He's a big boy. Like Uncle Chris."

Emmy's expression, if you used your imagination and gave her the benefit of the doubt, seemed to suggest that she wasn't so sure about that.

"Chris's mum went away a long time ago, before you were born," Eddie tried to explain, even though he didn't think the words were going to mean much. Maybe she would remember them, and one day understand that he had tried to tell her about it all. "And we were all very sad. And now we all feel sad all over again, but we know it'll be okay because we've been through it once before."

"We did this already, a long time ago, and it hurt but we're all okay," repeated Lily, her nose still in Emmy's hair. "Like when you fall down and hurt your knee? It gets better."

Emmy's little face was still scrunched up, but at least she wasn't sobbing. Eddie thought they all maybe wanted to sob a little, but none of them had that kind of energy left.

"So how would you feel about getting some sleep, kidlet?" he said, giving Emmy's hair a kiss as well.

And when they woke up... well, when they woke up, it would likely all be over.
