"It's going to be all right," Eddie promised her again, because it was the only thing he could promise. Somehow, in time, it was going to be all right again.

"Chris's mum went away a long time ago, before you were born," Eddie tried to explain, even though he didn't think the words were going to mean much. Maybe she would remember them, and one day understand that he had tried to tell her about it all. "And we were all very sad. And now we all feel sad all over again, but we know it'll be okay because we've been through it once before."
