The Subject Was Chilis

[ There have been better Saturday mornings, even in Mayfield. ]

[ Ilsa reacted to the events in an established pattern, for her - cooking. ]

[ After an early-morning run to the store, when there were only the drones to deal with at the general store, she's been in the kitchen most of the day making comfort food. Lots of it. With varying degrees ( Read more... )

[Crowe will show up, and being polite, will come by with some home made cookies. Ilsa had been helping him out, after all. Though, he really didn't understand exactly how much food she meant she'd made.]

Whoa... You planning to feed the whole town?

I, um, had some things to work out.

[ She looks a bit worried, and a little embarrassed. She spots the cookies. ]

Oh, thank you! I didn't have time to bake any cookies.

[ Ilsa's being completely honest, and puts the plat in front of the other desserts. ]

That's because you were busy cooking everything else imaginable. I've got to say, it all looks incredible. Um. What's wrong, though? If you don't mind my asking.

I misread someone this morning, and it caused an argument.

[ She scrubs at her face, ]

I'm not at my best in the mornings. Even when it counts.

Ah, I'm sorry. I hope it'll work out for you. Give it some time.

[He looks over all the food.] It, um, must have been quite an argument.

My fault, which makes it worse.

[ She goes to the fridge. ]

Tea, milk, or soda?

Have you had a chance to apologize yet...?

Um, tea is good.

No, not yet - though that was part of the baking, I think.

[ She pours a glass of iced tea, to counteract the hot chili. ]

So, are you wanting mild, hot, or incinerating?

Ah, let's try the middle one.

Hmm, well, baking isn't a bad way to apologize. Depends on who you're apologizing too, I guess.

Um, let me know what you think of the cookies then. I've been practicing.

[ She dishes up her chili Colorado, putting it on a plate with cornbread, ] I hope this is okay, there's cheese and onions on the table if you'd like to add them.

[ Then she snags one of the cookies from the plate Calleo brought, nibbling it. ]

[They're pretty good! He's improved his recipes a lot over the months, with help from Ciel and Ilsa.]

I'm sure it's great. I wish I could get the hang of cooking, but baking seems hard enough for me.

Interesting concept there - baking always seems more precice to me, while there's a lot of freedom in other forms os cooking.

[ Ilsa shrugs. ] I do like these, though.

Hmm, I don't know. Regular food as so many ways you can cook and prepare it and make it totally different... To me, baking seems more, um, stable I guess?

Oh, good! I'll have to make more, then. [Silence is gonna get so spoiled.]

[ Ilsa smiles at Calleo's thrill of excitement about his baking, and wonders who's going to be, *ahem*, "sweet-talked". ]

If you can bake well, the rest of it will come to you, in time.

[Maybe someday he'll make a good househubby.]

Ah, I hope so! Though baking is taking me long enough to tackle...

[ She gives him a look. ]

Calleo.

Hon.

How long have you been working on this?
