"There are many students who are troubled and many who have a fascination with death, but it doesn't mean that they are going to kill people."
Robin Kowalski, psychologist - speaking against the desire to use psychological profiling as a way to prevent future Virginia Tech-type massacres.
Well, I'm glad somebody pointed that out. As if goths didn't catch enough shit after the trenchcoat mafia thing- while Latin-Americans who wear conservative clothes were NEVER profiled after the incident with the Menendez brothers- I would hate to see those with morbid tendencies or those who write about violent topics singled out for suspicion and discrimination.
After all, then we'd have to remand William Shakespeare, Laurell K. Hamilton, and hell, Quentin Tarantino- to mental institutions, "just in case."
Force those who write about violence or death into mandated mental health treatment, and no one will write about violence or death. Not even to make meaningful statements about our society, not even if their only goal in writing is creative expression and social commentary.
It's just a few steps away from book burning.
