Population Clock There are too many people in the world.
It has been argued of course that this is untrue; that the more people there are the better - the more people there are the more minds we have to solve the world's problems.
However, evidence to the contrary is pretty . . . well . . . damning.
- Famines, deforestation, epidemics, and a host of other issues that threaten to whip out our species all come back to the issue of their just being way too many people to share resources, and space with.
As of
2005 China, India, and the U.S. had the largest populations.
Reason?
More people are being born than are dying.
Solutions? There are two
Make the death rate higher via
Eugenics.
Euthanasia. Just stop caring about your fellow man and let nature take her course.
Or
Make the birth rate lower.
Birth control;
One-Birth policies; Or
Spread education especially among women.
It has been shown that higher
educated women around the world, with better benefits and more options in their future are less likely the have large families.
But this most simple of solutions is the one most often looked over on an international level. This of course is due the the world wide idea that a woman's only use is to stay home, and keep while she produces and takes care the babies.
Now I have nothing against willing house-moms who choose to abstain from the work force in order to raise their children. Being a mother is no easy, part-time job and has few monetary benefits if any. A mother's job is not easy and that is why all mothers everywhere (be their single or married; or even male!) need as much help as they can get!
That is why I support efforts of
UniFem; the branch of the United Nations that is supposed to help unprivileged mothers and protect them from abuse.
When I first learned of UniFem I was sitting in the doctors office reading a magazine article about how underfunded the program is. According to the article that I have been unable to find since, UniFem is the lest funded, and least respected of all the U.N. projects. It is, according to this article, staffed with the least prestigious members of the U.N. staff and often fails to get it's agendas taken seriously. I at first felt foolish for never having heard of UniFem but after reading this article I wasn't surprised, nor was I surprised to find that very few of my peers knew of it either.
The more I think of the issue the more I'm convinced that existence UniFem is still a profound step in the right direction however. Helping women . . . sisters, mothers, and even grandmothers get what they need interns helps an entire family. A mother will not let her children go hungry. A sister will take care of her brothers and father. Grandmothers play an irreplaceable role in the intellect of her grandchildren and in the support and balance of her family! Help the women you help the world.
A greater example of this i witness watching the news after the earthquake in Haiti. Young boys and men trampled over everyone to get aid relief food and water. The situation got so bad that in some areas males were banned from the areas were relief rations were being held out. But the women could come in pick up what their families needed in a calm orderly way. There was no fear of the women selfishly hording the goods or holding up with the rations at gun point. Even during those time of scarcity the women took care of the families without doing harm to those around them.
Or course I know I only saw this on American TV, not first hand. But it still seems that like a pretty likely to over all population control is support UniFem and programs like it that give women a chance to live their own lives.
Perhaps one day I would like to work PR for them. We could form some sort of International Mothers' Day or something.
Smarter couples = Less children.
