Zuko tried to walk toward the end of the chamber. He hesitated more and more, unsteady, as the steps labored to come. He reached at the hand that had been guiding the exercise until it withdrew. It was in vain and he fell and wept.
Ozai turned aside to add: "Lu Ten sparked at six months, Iroh and I sparked at three months," the shadow could not mask his upset, "and it is said Azulon was birthed with fire."
Ursa sighed.
The Fire Sage gazed at the infant with a look of pity. "Prince Ozai, Zuko does possess the ability, yet it will come when it will come. Nobody can force it," the priest tried to soothe the father.
Ursa smiled as Zuko stopped crying. While Ozai and the Fire Sage traded anecdotes, the mother watched Zuko lovingly as he felt about the floor then attempted to crawl, to stand, to walk - only to fall again and yet remained determined to try again. There were no tears as he inched toward the parents.
"What does it matter, anyway, to spark or not to spark?" Ursa asked to Ozai. "Lu Ten not Zuko is the next Fire Lord."
Ozai stood enraged.
"Disgrace!" Ozai stood, enraged. "What I would give for a prodigy. You cannot fathom what I would give for a prodigy."
