Or, Dungeons & Dragons and a possible explanation for Marstii's behavior.
The D&D cartoon was released on dvd Dec 5th, having loved it when the show was on the air I bought a copy. Turns out I still do love, and remember well, this little gem… After viewing all the episodes and extras I started going back to websites about the D&D cartoon. One is a
POVOnline article by series developer Mark Evanier.
I hope you'll indulge me as I stray a bit. Perhaps it's just memory playing tricks, but back when Sintii was the host of the old MX mb I can't recall "fanboys/fangirls" raving about the cast's looks being a problem. After all, there were plenty of more interesting discussions, about where Sanctuary was, where the show was located, etc.
But things change, Sintii moved on and Dbwti came in. He did what he could to rein in the "such and such is hot" comments. Then came Marstii and the end time when "hot" comments ruled the board and intelligent discussion was pretty much pushed off to other boards… So, why the change in policy?
I can't be arsed to track down specifics on Mars to see if any data supports this idea, but perhaps he is a victim of the 80's "pro-social movement"? To quote Mr Evanier's article, "At the time, the dominant "pro-social" moral was as follows: The group is always right...the complainer is always wrong." While I dispute the notion that the people obsessed by the cast's looks were the majority of the posting base at the time, it must be admitted that they were extremely vocal. And those of us who wanted to discuss interesting topics? We complained, and rightly so. We complained about the lack of continuity, how the show gave us scenes where we were supposed to applaud needless murder/theft/and other criminal acts, how our discussions were getting lost in the sheer volume of dreck pouring into the board, and so on. Could all this be why talk of the cast's looks became the preferred type of post and many of the more intellectual discussions were treated like treason?
We'll never really know.
Edit: Yeah… Faulty premise, faulty conclusion, Fawlty Towers faulty mouse. Not a totally pointless post though, another question of mine was answered.
Another question though, anyone remember when Seth started posting on the old MX board? Was it before or after Mars became host of the mb?
