I've shown restraint and stayed out of the eggnog so far this season...love the stuff, thought...
Speaking of military strategy, were you annoyed, as I was by the way Helm's Deep was presented, a long wall with a thin line of defenders? I found that silly. A wall a fraction of that length, with defenders in many tiers, would have held out of much longer.
I never saw the Lord of the Rings movies, but it doesn't surprise me. Someone went with typical Hollywood bs about what makes "a better visual" or "is more dramatic" rather than think about a fortification's real purpose, surviving attacks.
Wild guess, the defenders mostly used swords and shields during the battle? And the orcs were denied simple siege weapons?
Actually, the orcs did have siege weapons, and some of the defenders did have bows, although they were elves who showed up unexpectedly.
Now, anyone who has read much history knows some of the most effective armies ever fielded were the horse-archers of the Mongols; these guys could ride at a full gallop and use their bows with deadly effect, firing arrows capable of piercing armor. [they even had whistling arrows used for signaling...] Now, doesn't it make sense that Rohan would have developed in an analogous fashion? And being horsemen, wouldn't they have something of a horror of being on the sedentary side of a siege?

Anyway, I was annoyed...
