A/N : it’s been a dog’s age, hasn’t it? I’ve been going through a lot. I have a day of peace and quiet so I decided to update. Thanks for being so patient.
They stood in the great hall of Frankenstein’s castle; a gathering of monsters. Kiseop’s eyes wandered across the walls; was his painting hanging there, perhaps? A voice from the top of the stairs interrupted his thoughts.
“Your portrait is safe, Mr. Gray. It shall be returned to you at the proper time.”
All eyes were upon the tall, long-legged young man as he made his way down the spiral staircase. Behind him were two very handsome young men, one tall and strong, the other impossibly beautiful.
He bowed deeply to each of his guests and shook their hands one by one.
“Rooms have been prepared for you. Jaejoong and Yunho will show you to them. Afterwards, please join me in the parlour for some drinks so we can get to know each other better.”
Changmin looked at the zombies who accompanied Song Joong Ki and raised an eyebrow.
“I’m afraid Jaz, Mosi and I are attached at the hip. It’s a tad inconvenient, but they’re a package deal.”
Dr. Shim nodded his head.
“Very well. We can always use the extra manpower. Can you instruct them to follow Jaejoong and Yunho? They don’t need to be at your side for drinks and dinner, do they?”
Joongki laughed, something his fellow companions hadn’t seen before. They smiled, save Kiseop who loosened his cravat. Still nervous about his painting, he wouldn’t relax until it was back in his possession.
“After your things are unpacked, the servants can head to their own quarters. Jaejoong and Yunho will take them. There’s also some food in the kitchen.”
Heechul nodded and his loyal gypsies followed Yunho and Jaejoong who started to carry the luggage up the stairs. Shindong turned to Kwon Jiyoung and took his things.
“It’s alright,” he explained to the others, “it gives him something to do. Now that he can’t ring the bells he feels very sad. This will lift his spirits.”
Changmin patted the Phantom on the back and extended his arm. He motioned for them to follow him to the parlour.
Shindong and Dracula’s gypsies followed Jaejoong and Yunho up the staircase. Each set of luggage was placed in the appropriate room. When they were done, Yunho bowed deeply and addressed Shindong.
“You can join the others now, Sir.”
Shindong blushed.
“No one’s ever called me Sir before. I’m not really like the others. I’m just a bell ringer.”
Jaejoong and Yunho looked at each other while the gypsies just sighed. The two zombies stood motionless outside the Wolfman’s door.
“There’s some bread, cheese and wine in the kitchen if you’re hungry. Follow me.”
They left the zombies behind and took the back stairs to the large kitchen that was occupied by two women. Yunho explained that one was the maid and the other the cook. The two women didn’t stay long in the kitchen; they scurried about and left in a hurry, trays of food in their hands. The gypsies made themselves at home, tearing chunks of fresh bread and opening a bottle of red wine.
“I’m sorry,” he apologized to Shindong and the gypsies. “ They’re not very friendly. I don’t think they like working here. Dr. Shim says the locals are afraid of him and say his experiments are unnatural. I haven’t been here very long, but we’ve had several maids and cooks come and go. Pretty soon Jaejoong and I will have to do everything around here. They say it’s because we’re monsters.”
Jaejoong looked at Yunho and raised an eyebrow.
“What’s a monster?” he asked.
The gypsies stopped eating and turned their attention toward Yunho.
“Well,” he answered while clearing his throat, “we are; I’ll explain later.”
“Eat up, please; it’s very good.”
Shindong leaned in to Yunho and whispered in his ear.
“Jaejoong seems a bit naive, even I know what a monster is.”
Not wishing Jaejoong to hear his reply, he beckoned the bellringer to follow him further away from the others.
“He’s new here. Very new. He has a lot to learn.”
Shindong looked over at the others who were gorging themselves and then spoke once more to the tall, gentle servant.
“So, what kind of monster are you?”
Yunho swallowed hard and took a deep sigh.
“The stitched up kind.”
He rolled up his sleeve to show Shindong his scars.
The bellringer’s eyes grew as wide as saucers.
“You’re THE monster. Jaejoong too?”
Yunho smiled.
“Dr. Shim was supposed to make me a girl but he created Jaejoong instead.”
Shindong giggled. The great Frankenstein’s bride, was a man.
The bell ringer and Yunho joined the others at the table and feasted upon the simple fare. The maid and the cook scurried back into the kitchen, all eyes upon them. They seemed frightened out of their wits. Yunho sighed as the two ladies packed their personal belongings and ran out the back door, most likely for good.
“I better tell Dr. Shim he’s lost another cook and maid. I’ll be back shortly.”
Yunho left, leaving Jaejoong alone with the rough looking gypsies and the bell ringer.
“I guess I will have to learn how to cook, “ he said nonchalantly. “I don’t think anyone from the village will want to work here ever again.”
Dr. Shim took the news about the staff quitting without batting an eye. He expected as much. He dismissed Yunho and addressed his new friends.
“Gentleman, it seems we are on our own, something I’m sure you are used to. Shall we raise a glass? To us, and what the future holds!”
They drank and ate heartily that evening, unaware of what was about to transpire. Dr. Shim leaned in to Heechul and whispered in his ear.
“Is he coming?”
The vampire smiled wickedly.
“Yes, and he’s bringing them all to us, just as I planned. He’s a willing slave and will do as I ask.”
Changmin nodded and leaned back in his chair.
“Soon,” he said to himself, “soon…”
