Summary: A group of scientists, professors, learned men and adventurers seek to prove that monsters are real, and along the way discover they are more human than they thought.
The moonlight which streaked through the ceiling of the fabricated temple was unnatural. All inside were bathed in the iridescent glow; faces illuminated by every color of the rainbow; the lights dancing as if they were the Aurora Borealis; but this was no phenomenon of nature; this was magic; and in Vicar Choi’s eyes, it was evil.
He clutched his cross and mumbled a prayer as if it could save him from whatever dark spell had been unleashed. He glanced at Geng; the professor’s eyes wide and his mouth sporting a sadistic grin. To Choi, his associate was no longer in his right mind; whatever monster would rise from the sarcophagus was a spawn of Satan, and Han Geng would be his servant.
The obsessed professor continued to read from The Book of the Dead; his voice loud and booming; it echoed off the terracotta walls of the temple. The more he called upon the spirits to raise the mummy, the louder his words became. The lights on the sconces began to flicker as the eerie iridescence surrounded the sarcophagus. The coffin began to violently shake; the witnesses to this ancient ritual staggering backwards in fear. Zico and his boys raised their guns in defense; trembling; they stood their ground lest the evil spirit of the mummy attack them. The professor insured his assistants that he could control the ancient prince, but in this moment, their faith in their rifles were greater than their faith in Han Geng.
The ground trembled beneath their feet; the floor cracking and making them stumble.
“Earthquake,” Kyung screamed as he grabbed Professor Geng’s arm
“Stop Sir,” he implored his benefactor. but the Professor was a man possessed.
The sarcophagus continued to shake; all stepped backward in fear as the lid of the coffin moved; dust from thousands of years spreading out into the air bringing with it the foul stench of death.
All was silent; the men stood still; breaths ragged; hearts pounding. They jumped as bandaged fingers slid through the opening of the lid. Rifles were raised even higher; Zico and his boys primed and ready to shoot.
“No,” Geneg told them. “Just wait and see.”
The slender, bandaged fingers grasped the coffin lid and tried to move it, but failed.
“Help him,” Geng ordered Zico; the young boss nodding to his boys who reluctantly dropped their weapons.
Frightened and excited at the same time, the men pushed the stone lid off of the coffin where it fell with a loud thump upon the ground. They staggered backwards as the slender hand once more appeared from inside the sarcophagus. The creature grabbed the sides of the coffin and crawled out; hunched over and shaking, it could barely stand; one hand still holding on to what remained of his one time final resting place.
The silence was deafening as the professor, the vicar and the young workers watched the creature as it struggled to stand on it’s own. Trembling; the mummy stretched out it’s arms for balance; feet planted firmly on the ground, it straightened up it’s body until it stood straight up. It was taller than they expected; slender with wide shoulders and a narrow waist. It’s hands clutched it’s face; fingers grasping the bandages and trying to pull them off.
“He can’t breathe,” Geng exclaimed; U Kwon pulling a knife from his belt and bravely approaching the creature. B Bomb joined him; he held on to the mummy who flinched in panic.
“Hurry now,” the professor ordered them.
The bandages were quickly removed; the two young men hastily retreating behind their leader. They went to pick up their guns but the professor shook his head.
“He won’t hurt us,” he told them.
The vicar was not reassured.
“You don’t know that. What if the Book of the Dead unleashed some evil, magical power?”
The professor smiled at his friend.
“Then you better hope God can save us.”
Siwon swallowed hard; he clutched his cross and began to pray, but as the mummy continued to strip the bandages from it’s face, the vicar couldn’t help but stare.
Eyes dark and blessed with long lashes stared back at him and he gasped. They narrowed; the vicar feeling the creatures gaze pierce his very soul. A regal nose followed; then lips full and cherry red. The mummy exhaled deeply; hot breath trailing out into the night. It raised it’s head and gazed at the men before him.
“Welcome, Prince Yoochun,” Han Geng spoke; one arm across his chest as he bowed deeply.
The others followed suit except the vicar; he was too stunned to react; his brain still trying to comprehend the situation. This was truly dark magic and he wasn’t sure he wanted to be a part of it; but part of it he was; he had witnessed something that no one ever had; the raising of a mummy from the dead.
As they all stood in wonder, the waters from the pond once more began to bubble; they failed to see it; that and the creature who rose silently from the depths. It kept its distance; only it’s eyes peeking through the murky waters. It blinked; a thin membrane sliding over it’s eyes; eyes that beamed with joy; his prince had returned from his long sleep. It sank beneath the surface and silently swam away; it’s agile body gracefully twisting and turning through the deep pool until it reached the safety of the lagoon. It floated to the surface; tail turning to legs as it reached the shore. Naked; skin glistening in the moonlight; Junsu, the Creature from the Black Lagoon stretched out upon the sandy beach and sighed.
“Yoochun…”
