sunday night excitement

i've only ever called 911 in canada once - when my crazy neighbour who i didn't realize was my neighbour at the time wouldn't stop ringing my doorbell at 4am and jess and i thought we were being followed home from the bar.

in the past 5 days i have had to call 999 here twice.

claire and i were walking home from the store a few days ago and there was a man lying on the sidewalk about 3 meters past the entrance to our house. he was passed out with his pants undone, dirtydirtydirty and drunk. i woke him up and asked if he was okay and he was completely incoherent. i asked where he lived, if i could help him or get him anything, if he could sit or stand up, and nothing. total gibberish. i told him i would call a taxi to take him to a hospital because it looked like when he had fallen his face got cut up and it didn't seem like his legs would support him if he did try and stand up. then he asked me if i was from canada. clear as a bell. that was the only thing either of us understood of what he said the entire time. he finally stood up and kinda stumbled a few feet, so we went into our entrance and i called 999 cause he was falling down again. then he managed to collect himself and walked off down the street. so bizarre. all this at about 7pm.

tonight i was walking home from work [about 11:45pm] and i could smell smoke. then i could smell more smoke. i saw crazy orange flames flying out of a garbage bin ahead of me with tons of smoke pouring out. there was a man trying to get in his flat nearby so i asked what street we were on [i don't know the names of any streets in my neighbourhood... ] and he wouldn't tell me, but i called 999 and the lady figured it out based on what streets i did know. by the time i was getting near my flat the fire truck pulled up and a couple of firemen got out. i ran over to explain to them where it was and have now discovered that firemen really can be hot.

so now i've had to ask for the police and the fire brigade when the 999 operator picks up and asks "fire, ambulance, or police?". let's hope this kind of thing doesn't happen in threes and i don't have to call for an ambulance anytime soon.

also. leith festival is happening right now. mostly right outside my front door. today they had music playing through speakers that i could hear clear as day in my bedroom. literally every second song they played for about 2 hours was 500 miles by the proclaimers. i have never been so happy to go to work in my life. for all i know this continued all afternoon.

i have the next 2 weekends off!! i'm a happy camper.
