FLASH #1

Feb 03, 2010 01:38

A hum begins to emanate from the very Island itself. It starts off low, a gentle throbbing, until it grows louder. The hum becomes so loud that all those on the Island double over in pain, holding their ears as they wonder what is happening. To some, this sound is all too familiar. To others, it's another odd happening on this strange Island.

Juliet is stacking some spare boxes in the closet of the darkened guest room, having finally cleaned out their over-full bookshelf, when there's a familiar sound that starts humming through the air. She barely has time to be surprised before she's doubled over in pain and yelling for James. Suddenly, everything goes white and Juliet loses consciousness, toppling into the closet as boxes cascade around her.

Juliet finally awakens, and with it comes a sudden flash of memories, of dark spaces and fear and pain... and her death. She comes to with a start, panicked, suddenly aware of the dark, of how she seems to be inside a small space again, covered in heavy things that remind her all too heavily of the moment of her death. Of all that pain.

Juliet lets out an anguished scream, struggling against the weight of the boxes, disoriented and frightened.

James had been reading a book in the hammock after dinner, and as it had gotten darker, he had put it down, deciding to take a nap instead. He was awoken by a humming sound, and it wasn't soon before that familiar white light was taking over everything he knew.

When he woke up, he was on the ground, the smell of dirt strong in his nose. He pushes himself up as memories flood his mind. Time spent, digging a hole and filling it back in again, the ground fuller than it was before. Memories of a place in the middle of the island, filled with people who he could have cared less about.

He finally stands, stretching his body when he hears the scream from inside. His eyes widen and he takes off running before he even knows where he heading. When he gets inside the house, he looks around for a light that will tell him where to go. When he can't see one, he starts to panic.

Juliet!

Juliet struggles anew at the sound of his voice, the situation all too familiar. She sobs as she calls out.

J-JAMES!

Juliet curls up as best she can, trying to block out everything that's rushing into her mind. The smell of her own blood, the metallic taste in her mouth as she bled out... it's too much, too overwhelming, and she gasps between sobs.

He hears her shout again and runs to the spare room, flipping the light switch on. He sees her, covered in boxes, and curses under his breath as he rushes to her, flinging boxes to and fro like they have nothing in them.

It's ok, I'm right here.

Once he's got her free of the clutter, he grabs her and pulls her towards him, falling back as he does so. He gathers her in his arms and holds her close, murmuring in to her.

It's ok, it was-- it's over now.

Juliet clings to the front of his shirt, gasping and crying, shaking slightly.

Am I... James, where... are we back there, am I... am, am I okay? Are...

She buries her face in his front. She can't feel any pain... but she couldn't feel anything at the end, either.

He holds her close, face buried in her hair, trying to hold back all of the emotions that have crept up on him. The situation is all too familiar and, coupled with the new images swimming in his head, it's almost too much. He wants to say it was a dream, a terrible nightmare that doesn't mean anything, but he knows that it was anything but.

We're in our house and I've got you. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you again Jules. I swear.

Oh... oh... oh James, I...

She wraps her arms around him, shuddering.

I thought I was dying again. I thought I was losing you.

A fresh wave of tears takes over and she clings to him, crying against him. The knowledge that she's still alive and whole, that they're still together, however, is helping her calm down. She cries against him a moment more before her tears turn to soft, hiccuping sighs.

I'm s-so, so sorry... I'm... I...

He buries his face into her neck, rubbing her back as she cries.

I know Jules. I remember too. It's ok, it's over. Shhh...

Juliet holds tight to him, sighing against him. The memories are still so vivid in her mind.

I'm sorry... sorry you had to... to go through all of that, James. Baby, I'm so sorry.

He can feel tears prickling at his eyes as she continues to apologize, and he tries to push them back but everything is just so fresh in his mind.

Stop apologizin, Blondie. It's over and done with. We're hear now and I...I don't know how, but this is how it is.

Juliet pulls back and begins kissing all over his face, her face still wet with tears.

We're here. We're here.

She repeats it like a mantra. The tears have finally stopped, but there's a heavy, broken feeling in her heart, and it's for him.

I'm here.

Everything he's been feeling, combined with Juliet's words and actions, is finally just too much. All the grief and anger he had felt after he had lost her. Lost her while she was still in his arms, and then carrying her until he had found the perfect spot to dig her grave. He couldn't believe he had forgotten it, but he knew that what had happened wasn't a dream. It was real. He doesn't want to, but as he sits there with her, his lips start to tremble and a few tears fall down his face.

Juliet's tears start again as she sees James start to cry, and she makes a soft moaning sound at the sight. She uses her thumb to gently wipe them away, resting her forehead against his. They stay this way for a long moment before she speaks, her voice gentle but cracking slightly.

Do... do you remember that idea we had a while back? About getting away for a week?

James places his hands on either side of Juliet's face, the closeness comforting. He gets himself under control, trying not to dwell on all of the new thoughts in his head. When she mentioned the trip, he only nods at first, but soon finds his voice.

Yeah. Somethin about the Hydra...

Mmhm. I'm thinking... I'm thinking maybe now's a perfect time. What do you think?

She gives him a gentle kiss, stroking his face and brushing his hair out of his eyes.
