I hope that this is not too specific a topic to post.
Johnny dear, don’t be afraid,
I will keep your secrets safe.
Bring me to the blind man who
Lost you in his house of blue. -
Dear Johnny by Poe For years after reading House of Leaves, even in my pool of friends who, for the most part, adore Poe’s music, I had to look very hard to find people who had read the book. For some reason, it seems like quite a few of you have read it or are interested in it and are planning to read it. I thought I’d make a post for discussing the book and topics related to it.
So tell me what you love best about this book and why you love it. Or, if you didn’t like it, say what you didn’t like about it. Who are your favorite characters? What is Thumper’s real name? *eyebrows*
I really loved the way the layout of the pages changed with the mood of the book. As it got more intense I found myself frantically turning the pages.
I’m usually a very speedy reader, but this book required me to pay more attention than I usually do to a book. That’s a good thing, I suppose. It was a nice difference.
I actually would have liked to learn more about Pelafina, Johnny Truant’s mother, and I would have liked to know more about what shaped Johnny into the guy he was in the book.
I sometimes compare House of Leaves to the book in the movie The Number 23. I didn’t go totally insane after reading it, but I did start to see bits of real life that reminded me of the book. There are obvious references like Poe’s entire album Haunted, but that’s because the book and her album were inspired by the same events. There is, for instance, a Fall of Troy song titled “You Got A Death Wish, Johnny Truant?”
Also, if you look for it, there are some fantastic videos on YouTube inspired by the book. My favorites are the trailers for The Navidson Record. Here are two of my favorites under the cut...
