J.J. Abrams on Converting 'Star Trek 2' to 3D: 'I Didn't Want to Do It'

Jan 09, 2012 07:43

Hello! This is my first actual post here, so I'm a bit unsure how to go through with this.
A lovely article popped up in my e-mail about the 3-D conversion today: )

Interesting article - I'm not surprised that he didn't want to film in 3D, since it requires a different technique than filming in 2D. Anyone have any idea how lens flares come across in 3D films? (I avoid 'em like the plague.)

This bit from the same article made me smile:

"We just were looking for someone with the most awesome name in history," said Abrams. "That was the casting call. We asked for someone with the most awesome name in history, ever, and Benedict Cumberbatch showed up, so we were like, 'You're cast!' "

That is the best casting criteria. I worry about Benedict being typecast, though.

Even if it had been only 3-D, there are 2-D glasses out there you can buy that will eliminate that irritating fad.

I'll see it in both. I'm one of those people who, if they love a movie, will try to see it at least once in EVERY format. lol For 3D, I come armed with headache medicine and I can always just take off my glasses for a bit if it starts to bother me.

I usually sit kind of in the middle. Need to try the back next time then. Thanks for the tip!

Anybody notice that Bruce Greenwood is listed as one of the screenwriters? Whut??

Wait, what? I feel that's a typo...He doesn't have any writing background.

Well, he's a good songwriter, but...maybe they let him write his own lines. Or maybe it's a typo like you said. *shrug*

This is very true, but there's a large difference between song and screen. I think it's a misprint because the section after it has the cast where he's missing.

Either way, whichever my theatre gets, I'm excited. I think 3D is just another tool that can make a movie better. A lot of directors right now aren't that great at it, which is the problem, but I think they would put the effort in for Star Trek. The upcoming Star Wars conversion looks good.
