Holy Spock! Jordan's $1.5 billion Star Trek theme park gets greenlight
Star Trek fans don't come bigger than this one. Aiming to boldly go where no man has gone before, King Abdullah of Jordan has given the go-ahead to a $1.5 billion Star Trek-inspired theme park in his Middle Eastern gulf country.
The king appeared as an extra in the Star Trek: Voyager TV series, and is obviously pretty serious in his devotion. The 184-acre site, in the coastal area of Aqaba, will be named the Red Sea Astrarium (pictured right in an artist's impression).
It'll have four hotels, theatrical entertainment, restaurants, shops and a series of Trekkie-friendly rides like the state-of-the-art 'space-flight adventure' simulator. Other attractions will draw from "Jordan's Nabatean, Babylonian, British and Roman influences".
Proving that we're not in deep space nine just yet, the park will be powered by renewable energy, with a centre for educating visitors about eco-friendly practices on planet earth, so that it will indeed live long and prosper.
The Red Sea Astrarium is due to start construction in March 2012, and open in 2014.
