GQMFs!  What (if anything) should be our response to the earthquake crisis in Haiti?!  You know the Enterprise would be there in a heartbeat, passing out blankets and synthesizing food and providing sexy doctors to help.

If you think we should band together and raise funds, make your voice heard! This is, after all, the community that saved calumfan 's dog ( Read more... )

I was just posting about this on my journal, but something I'd like to put out there is that people who can afford to donate think about doing so over an extended amount of time. A recovery effort like this is going to take an extremely long time, way beyond when the cameras stop rolling. I'd think smaller, sustained donations are better to any organization then huge ones in huge, sporadic bursts. I don't work for any aid organizations though, so I may be way off? I'm trying to think of how I'm going to go about with aid myself, so....

There's this fandom related LJ community. I don't know much about it, but everyone's linking to it today.

I hope everyone in this community's family and loved ones are safe, and no one was personally effected. <3 to you all.

Oh, and wow, I ignored the original purpose of this entry, asking our opinions.... Well, I think if anyone can donate immediately, privately, they should do so right now in some way.

I'd like to see us do something, though. Maybe some sort of party post style telethon? Where for every post / comment someone donates like.... 50 cents, to a dollar? Like, I can see this in my mind, but I don't know how we'd go about doing that?

Ooh! I like that idea. I don't know how it would work either... would we make it a pledge system where someone can sponsor you can will donate a certain amount per post (or you could sponsor yourself)? Sort of like a walk-a-thon but a party-a-thon? That could generate a lot :D

Yes! That's more like what I was thinking. Like, it could be an Anarchy day, but for this sole purpose.

I really like that idea! Except don't put an expected amount, just have each comment contain a pledge to donate underneath whatever awesome party stuff they come up with. With a goal perhaps? Maybe someone would volunteer to do a vid or a macro story or something if we reach a certain amount? And maybe the OP could have something about encouraging local fundraisers and ideas for that too, to get people outside the comm involved?

Yeah, I was just thinking in another comment down thread about something like this..... Like people could form smaller groups, maybe like LA or NYC or where ever there are groups of GQMFs who sort of know each other in real life and could compile money easily, well they could set up some like.... request post and for every 25 or something fills donate an amount.... And it could be locally donated, with proof shown, or done to a large organization that the majority votes on or something. It's kind of like what someone was doing on Tumblr, for every 100 reblogs they'd donate 20 dollars. Personally, I could not do that myself. But maybe if people formed their own little groups it could be done.

This is a great idea! Party post telethon, I love it. :D I don't know about paying per comment though, the last party post had 10,000 commments - so $5,000 if matched at 50 cents... @_@

Here are some thoughts on how it could be organized:
- Put a donation goal and a list of recommended charities in the original post.
- Some people can't donate money but have volunteered to make GIFs/crafts/whatever, list those volunteers in the original post and say what they will do for what donation amount.
- Folks who can donate money could post a screencap of their donation receipt, with RL name and other personal info blacked out of course, but with the organization's name and confirmation number still showing. The amount they donate would be counted toward the donation goal, and if they donate enough for a GIF/craft/whatever then the volunteers would be responsible for giving that to them.

Ah yes, I was thinking of how many comments party posts get, and if every time we entered captcha it cost 50 cents..... so much money. Of course, there'd be no way to moniter that, not with party posts and how fast they roll. It'd be way too confusing ( ... )
