Supernatural's Boss: Expect "Unexpected Deaths" in the Season 6 Finale
Sera Gamble told TVGuide.com at Sunday's PaleyFest that the season finale will feature at least two unexpected deaths.
"There will definitely be deaths," said Gamble, who penned the penultimate episode for Season 6. "I would say that the last couple of episodes are pretty dark. The situation is rather desperate for Sam and Dean and they truly have to ban together to get the job done."
Executive producer Eric Kripke, who just finished writing the season finale, said there will be a face-to-face confrontation between the brothers and Eve. "It's epic and daunting," Misha Collins, who plays Castiel, added. "The final confrontation is definitely not what anyone is expecting. It is, however, larger and more epic than the viewers are expecting."
But you might not want to hold your breath for a resolution. Despite Supernatural not being renewed for a seventh season - yet! - the producers are leaving the finale wide open. "It's a cliffhanger, so everyone needs to be prepared that they're going to be tearing their hair out all summer," Kripke says.
"We're certainly preparing for a Season 7," Gamble says, adding that if there isn't one, the cliffhanger might anger fans.
"This is a cliffhanger unlike any other," Padalecki says. "We've had Sam die and Dean die and dad die, so we've had a lot of deaths. This one doesn't necessarily end with death, but with a whole new beginning." [...]
"I will say we conclusively deal with Sam's amnesia and the fact that he doesn't remember what happened to him in hell," Kripke says." He's got this bit of drywall in his head, but it's a shabby, unstable piece of drywall and it's only a matter of time before the wall falls down, and in the finale, the wall falls down."
"It's something that Sam is both afraid of and also he's dying to know what he did that year that he was soulless," Gamble adds. "It's something that Dean has great fear about. Every ounce of big-brother protectiveness inside him wants to shield Sam from what might happen if the wall comes down, so it's a pretty major thing for them."
The truth, however daunting it may be, will not tear apart the brothers. "We're actually enjoying that, for the first time in a long time, the brothers are a really strong, cohesive unit, so we're going to keep them like that for the foreseeable future," Kripke says.

'Supernatural' finale scoop: What's going to happen to Sam? Hint: Jared Padalecki says they've saved 'the scariest for last'
Eric Kripke revealed that in the season finale, Sam’s wall is going to crumble.
“We’re going to deal head-on with the story of what happens when those memories come flooding loose. That’s in the finale, which I just wrote and turned into Sera [Gamble] yesterday,” he revealed.
When the wall was constructed by Death, the brothers were warned that the mental and physical consequences of its destruction could be dire - and we shivered in fear at the thought of Sam in that awful condition. According to star Jared Padalecki, we should be scared.
“We’re saving the best for last - and the scariest for last. It does come down, and as death warned, it’s a catastrophe,” he told EW. “Sam has to battle something he’s never battled before, which is himself.”
“Sam is going to have to ultimately confront what he did soul-less and did in hell. There’s a lot of Sam soul searching,” he added.
In related finale scoop: Kripke said fans can look for everything to “come to a head,” including the war in heaven, the showdown with the Mother of All, and the mystery behind Purgatory. “It’s just sort of turning everything up into a high boil,” he said.

'Supernatural' spoilers revealed in Los Angeles at PaleyFest!
[It] was revealed that Edlund's turn in the director's chair will be for the twentieth episode of the show, which has still not been fully edited. It is a Castiel-centric episode that deals quite heavily with the war in heaven and even introduces a new female character in Rachel, Castiel's confidante and Lieutenant. The guys joked that Collins is adopting her ala Angelina Jolie but no one mentioned what actress was cast in the role, nor how her fate would play out. Gamble did point out that they "like to kill people", though, so she may not be so long for this world when all is said and done.
What else do we know about this episode? Well, according to Edlund "it's very emotionally heavy." It has to be since it's only two away from the finale. [...] he said this time around the episode he wrote take a darker turn and will set up the emotional arc for those final two episodes. [...]
Episode 6.19, "Mommie [sic] Dearest," meanwhile, will only feature Samantha Smith reprising her role as Mary Winchester, not Amy Gumenick who portrayed her younger counterpart. Gamble promised LA TV Insider Examiner that "when you see the episode, you will see why it had to be Smith. We had a specific reasoning for using her version of Mary. And you know, whenever Dean and Sam see their mother again, it's never really an entirely happy occasion!"
Gamble also confirmed to us that we have not seen the last of Lisa (Cindy Sampson) and Ben (Nicholas Elia) for season six. She wouldn't say exactly how or when they return, but their presences will certainly be felt in the next few episodes as Dean struggles with the idea of heaven blowing up and a pergatory [sic] here on Earth.
Dean's amulet is also going to be M.I.A. for the indefinite time right now. Kripke joked that contract negotiations with the amulet failed because it was a diva and decided to take a guest gig on One Tree Hill instead. But really, it was thrown in the trash, so the odds of it just popping back up? Not good. In fact, his exact quote was: "Currently there are no plans to return the amulet."
Similarly Dean's jacket is unfortunately gone, too, as it was stolen from a photoshoot awhile back. But that doesn't stop the gang from taking part in such events now! In fact, earlier today some of the guys from the show took part in a brand new photo shoot for TV Guide Magazine, in conjunction with their latest fan poll. [...]
What else may happen in season seven? Gamble said she "can't say too much without giving away what happens in episode twenty-two [of season six]" but that she is definitely already thinking about the future of the show and that "of course Sam and Dean's life will be difficult."
"We're always coming up with new kinds of monsters and stuff that we think would be fun to dramatize," she continued. "Ones that have interesting storylines and are played by amazing actors. One of my favorite ones from this season was the Alpha-vampire played by Rick Worthy because he was compelling, and I felt like his performance was really strong, and I feel like he had interesting things to say. That was fun and whether that comes up as a monster we've never really met before [remains to be seen]."

'Supernatural's' Jensen Ackles at PaleyFest: Is Dean's happy ending Butch and Sundance or Thelma and Louise?
Ackles and Padalecki head back to Vancouver to continue working on episode 6x21, which is a Dean-centric episode. "Twenty-one I know is going to be a big one for me. Twenty-two is a big one for Jared's character. The stakes are raised, the emotions are high."
Aren't they always? Last season's finale, "Swan Song," was one of our favorite "Supernatural" episodes ever, tying in the brothers' history with each other and the war between heaven and hell.
"I don't know that we can outdo that," Ackles says. "That's Kripke's 5-year plan, and he stuck to it, and I give him kudos for that. This will be a little different, but it'll still be tough." He's referring to the physical and emotional toll that those last few episodes always take on the actors. "Jared and I have done 21 episodes - it's like running a marathon all season, and then at the very end they ask you to sprint the last two miles. It's exhausting. But at the end it has a good payoff." [...]
We asked Ackles what he envisions as a happy ending for Dean.
"Probably a Thai massage parlor?" he jokes. "No, I'm just kidding. Eric's gonna write that in now, I know he is. I think it'd be [Dean] and his brother kind of taking off in the Impala and having things back to Season 1, just doing what they do best and just doing it until they can't do it anymore. Souls intact, everything intact, going out guns blazing." He pauses. "Maybe it's a Butch Cassidy and Sundance thing, maybe it's Thelma and Louise. Who knows."
If you're not familiar with "Thelma & Louise," you should be -- but basically, the movie ends with the two friends driving their car off a cliff into the Grand Canyon. Ouch.
After the interview, Ackles came back to add: "Actually - no Thelma and Louise. We have to save the Impala. The Impala can't be damaged in Dean's happy ending."
