PATRICK CHAN: "I skate to make people happy"
Canadian Patrick Chan is called one of the favourites for the Grand Prix Final, starting tomorrow in Beijing, by his fans. During the pentultimate competition of the Grand Prix series in Moscow, he surprised everyone: after many statements about how it's possible to win in men's figure skating without the quad, he added this jump into both his programs this season. Chan talked about the radical change in his views and about his future plans in this interview with Sports Express.
To start, I'd like to go back half a year and talk about the Olympics in Canada. What did you like, and what left bad memories?
I'd call my performance bad. I was one of the medal contenders, but I did not skate my programs well enough, I didn't skate what I'd planned, and didn't get the results I had wanted. Of course, I was disappointed, but the experience I gained in Vancouver with help me, especially if I decide to compete in Sochi. So I'm very happy that I participated in Vancouver. Now I go on the ice with more confidence, I've gotten braver. I think that the Olympics, and the motivation that I had from them, is the one of the reason I started doing quads.
You wanted to get better?
Yes, I wanted to get better and get to a different level. And become World Champion. You know, I think that doing the quad is necessary. It's also very cool. I know that people enjoy seeing this jump done. So now it's very important for me to include this jump in my programs.
Would you agree with the assertion that a bad quad can ruin a whole program
No, I don't think that. Even when this jump isn't sucessful, you can still win. A jump with four rotations isn't the whole program, it's only one element in it.
You jump the quad very quickly, you don't have a very long entrance. How are you able to do this?
I just know how to quickly gather the necessary speed. I don't need to spend a long time to prepare for this jump and that's how I like to do this jump: with a short entrance.
Let's return to the Olympic games: Was there anything in Vancouver not related to figure skating that was memorable?
I really liked that I could get to know the skiers, the speed skaters. The Olympic village was great: we talked a lot and ate with athletes from other countries, which was cool.
You said, "If I go to Sochi". You're not sure about this?
I don't know. It's so far away...I don't plan my life further than a year ahead. And I still want to go study. I'm interested in studying business. And afterall, I'm getting older.I hope I can stay healthy. Nobody knows what could happen, right?
Your bussiness education could somehow be tied to figure skating in the future?
Most likely, no. I've spent enough time on this sport. When I'm done, I'd like to persue a career in a completely different area.
What do you like least in figure skating?
I think the worst part about figure skating is that there is only one chance to win a medal. You only have four minutes to show what you're capable of. One mistake can change everything. In tennis, for example, you can make a mistake and then fix the situation. In figure skating, if you make a mistake there's no way to undo it. It's a very technical, very precise sport and every minute counts.
How would you like to be remembered by fans?
I would like to be known not only as a skater who can jump, do a quad, but also as someone who can show beautiful skating. For this I still need to work a lot on my technical elements, on my jumps. Especially on the landings and flow out of my jumps. My jumps are still not very stable, but I plan on working on this.
I don't know if you're aware, but at the moment you're known as a skater who is constantly overscored.
Yes, I know. This is a reason why I'm working on my jumps so that in the future nobody can say that about me. I understand this point of view: if a skater made a grave error, he shouldn't win.
Does it matter to you what people say, what's written in the press?
Yes, of course. But I try to to follow everything too closely.
You grew up in an atheletic family and you like many very different sports: tennis, golf, and you even tried mountain climbing. What other sport would you like to try that you haven't had the chance to yet?
I'd like to play hockey. It's a very popular sport in Canada. Actually, I started figure skating because of hockey.
Well, maybe when you're done with figure skating, you'll try playing hockey professionally? Maybe in Sochi we'll see you in a different sport?
No, it's already too late. Maybe when I'm done with figure skating, I'll take up skiing, I'm not a bad skier. Not proffessionally, obviously.
HAPPY FAPPING WANKING!
