Switzerland's only hope
Figure skaters compete for spots in Europeans
At the Swiss National Figure Skating Championships, it's also about participation in the European Championships in Bern. The still-injured Sarah Meier has a spot.
After the injury-induced cancellation of Sarah Meier and the retirement of Stéphane Lambiel and Jamal Othman, the Swiss Championships, biginning today, are completely open from the start. In addition to the medals, they're also about paticipation in the European Championships at home in Bern on January 24-30.
Three spots for men
The men will be awarded three spots at the Europeans. Mikael Redin, Laurent Alvarez, Moris Pfeifhofer, Tomi Pulkkinen and Stéphane Walker will be competing for these.
Sarah Meier keeps spot in Europeans
For the ladies, it will be harder to qualify for Bern. If Sarah Meier is fit for Europeans, she will have a spot. In this case, only one spot would be free. Betty Heim, Romy Buhler, Myriam Leuenberger and Nicole Graf will be competing for this. The latter is the only skater who has already been Swiss champion - in 2008 in La Chaux-de-Fonds. In the Bossard-Arena, you can look forward to the new pair Anaïs Morand/Timothy Leemann.
Tough selection criteria
The national championships are not the only selection criterion for the Europeans. 60 percent of the total points achieved are added together with 40 percent of the highest score in an international competition.
LOL YEAH IDK IF THE LAST BIT MAKES SENSE, NOTHING WITH NUMBERS AND PERCENTAGES MAKES SENSE TO ME. BUT I GUESS IT MEANS THEY HAVE A FINAL SCORE THAT IS 60% NATS AND 40% BEST INTERNATIONAL SCORE OR W/E. ALSO IF ANYTHING SOUNDS WEIRD IT'S BC I'M TRANSLATING BETWEEN MY 2ND AND 3RD LANGUAGES FFFFFF
sauce TL;DR: SWITZERLAND IS DOOOOOOMED EVEN THO THEY'RE HOSTING EUROS, ANAÏS MORAND REMAINS PRETTY
