From Artonice.it:

In the next few days the 2010 Cup of China will take off as the third event in the 2010 Grand Prix of Figure Skating, and it will be the occasion for the seasonal debut of Italian Champions Federica Faiella and Massimo Scali. Coming from a very difficult yet very happy year, here they tell us what they have in store for the new season they are ready to begin.

AOI: What are your programs this season? Which themes did you choose?
Massimo Scali: For the Short Dance we took our inspiration from the musical “My Fair Lady”,

while for the Free Dance we’ll be telling the story of the famous bullfighter Manolete, dancing on a flamenco music.

AOI: Starting from the Short Dance, this year’s new entry: what can you tell us of your program?
MS: In this program we are taking direct inspiration from the movie, giving great emphasis to theatricality and interpretation: even our costumes will be basically copies of the ones from the movie (of course adapted to our necessities!). We also worked with a fabulous actress - Gabriella Franchini - who helped us in building our interpretation, taking care of even the smallest details. Our program starts from the moment when Eliza is introduced to the high society, and will narrate the dynamics of the love story between her and Professor Higgins.

AOI: Did you have any problem with the Short Dance, or were you able to mix effortlessly the compulsory sequences within the rest of the program? Did you expect it would be harder or easier than it actually was?
MS: At the start we were quite skeptical on the good outcome of this combination between compulsory dance and original dance, but in the end I have to say that I think that during the construction of the program the compulsory dance mixed really well with the rest of the program, and what we obtained is quite pleasant, and the whole building process was quite easy.
I also have to say that I was really happy about the rule that imposes that we cannot start or end the program with the compulsory pattern, as it really forced us to make it become a central, but seamless, part of the whole program.
What we were not expecting is the physical fatigue that the Short Dance involves, because we imagined that the compulsory part would provide some kind of breathing room in the general effort required by the Short Dance… but we were wrong, as the compulsory part has become a physically demanding section, on which we have had to work quite a lot.

AOI: Let’s move on to the Free Dance: how did you come to this choice, and how will this program be?
MS: The idea of skating a flamenco is not new to us, we even considered it last season for the original dance - but then we preferred to choose Italian rhythms for the Olympic year; but the flamenco is a music that both Fede and I feel deeply, and we thought it was a good choice for the program with which we’ll end our career [;_____; NO DON'T RETIRE FEDIMISSIMO!] - we started it with a flamenco (note: it was in the OD rhythms for the 2001-2002 season), and we’ll end it with a flamenco.
We will be using a flamenco music, but we won’t be dancing a pure flamenco - meaning that we won’t be doing a pure flamenco dance but we’ll be telling the story of two people, a man and a woman. The music will be a flamenco because this is the rhythm that is associated with the world we’re describing, and it is the perfect music for this passion, but we’ll not necessarily dance a pure flamenco.
We’ll be telling the story of a man and a woman - I will be the famous toreador Manolete, and Federica will represent both his passions: his woman, but also the bull-fighting: she will be dressed in red, the red of blood, of the bull and the red of passion, of love - this is the idea.

AOI: Hopes and goals for this season?
MS: One should never answer this question, says the superstition!
AOI: Did you see some other skaters’ programs? If yes, what do you think of those?
MS: For now we’re just concentrated on ourselves, on our upcoming seasonal debut, and on trying to do the best we can.

AOI: How is Federica’s health? Has the situation improved since last season?
MS: It is not all resolved yet, but things are definitely much better and we are able to train. Actually, this is our main hope for this season: to be able to face the season with less stress, without all the problems that plagued us last year.

AOI: With whom are you working this season and where?
MS: We’re continuing on the path we’ve started last year, so we created the programs in Italy with Paola Mezzadri before the summer, and the we transferred to our “base” in Philadelphia where we work daily with Natalia Linichuk and Gennadi Karponossov. Another crucial element in our team are our choreographers Barbara Melica and Corrado Giordani, and of course we’ll also be working with Ludmilla Vlasova.
