VAUGHN CHIPEUR IS RETIRING
OTTAWA - Two-time Canadian silver medallist Vaughn Chipeur is calling it quits from his competitive figure skating career.
The 25-year-old Edmonton native announced Thursday that while he’ll no longer perform in front of judges, he’ll continue to skate in professional shows across the country before joining the lineup on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. wat
“Without many of you I would never have had the opportunities or experiences that I have been so fortunate to have,” Chipeur said in thanking his former coaches, clubs and members of the skating community.
In addition to a pair of second-place finishes at the Canadian championships in 2009 and 2010, Chipeur was fourth in 2008 and seventh in 2007. He was 23rd at the Vancouver Winter Olympic this past February.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Vaughn over the past five years,” said longtime coach Scott Davis of the Calalta Figure Skating Club. “It was an exciting time which culminated in two national silver medals, a top 12 placement at worlds and representing Canada in the 2010 Olympics. I want to wish him well in his professional career and will miss those high flying triple axels on a daily basis.”
Chipeur’s best international finish was a third place in 2006 at the Nebelhorn Trophy event in Oberstdorf, Germany.
“The past few seasons saw Vaughn move up the rankings to represent Canada at the ISU world figure skating championships and Olympic Games. Vaughn strived in the competitive atmosphere and had some of his best performances at those times,” said Skate Canada high performance director Mike Slipchuk. “We wish him the best as he continues skating professionally.”
