since they are abolishing them as "compulsory" meaning mandatory some dancers will now have the choice to do them, and perhaps letting couples chose to do them, if they regularly do well in them.
I think that even if some teams *wanted* to do them there'd not be enough to warrent putting them in a competition. Far as I know most don't like doing them cause they take up so much time training. Though I do like the idea that say the top 10 do them or something.
And I think even somebody who didn't know much about ice dance could watch compulsories and get a good idea of why the top-ranked skaters deserved their positions
Exactly this. It's how I got into ice dance, other than the Kerrs being awesome with their programs. I watched the whole Vancouver at like 3am and was entranced. It's probably why I still don't like ~normal pairs skating.
Normal pairs skating is so stagnate right now. You see the same moves being performed and they're more or less in the same order. It's why I have a new appreciation for ice dance, it has more creative freedom
Maybe? I admit I've probably not given it the time it deserves, I'll lurk youtube tomorrow just for you. But if I end up stanning more people I'm gonna blame you, kay ;)
I don't watch ice dancing too much but I think I'm going to miss the OD more than the CD :/
What I'm most curious about is the mixed team event. The ISU seems to really want it and it does sound kind of cool but I don't know how I feel about making skaters who are just coming off of performing the skate of their life (probably) skate again. I mean I'm sure they're exhausted!
Yeah but I think what I liked about it was the themes and IDK if it'll have that anymore.
I wrote below about the mixed team thing. Basically they're going to put skaters in teams based on their placeing at the main event, there would be a mens skater, a ladies skater, a pair team and a dance team on every team and they'd all perform their free programs and whatever team gets the most points wins. I think it seems like it could be fun...
True, if they took themes out we'll all be pretty sadfacey. We can cross our fingers and hope.
I saw (& edited it into the post, hope you don't mind) It does sound pretty fun, but yeah they'd probably not enjoy it after doing 2 full routines in their main discipline. But it does seem a little like we'll just end up watching the same program all over again, unless I suppose if they were allowed to fun it up a bit and have a different FP that's more gala-esque~
WHAT THE HECK IS THE 'MIXED TEAM'? AND WILL IT BE SEXY?
I LIKED THE COMPULSORIES, BUT I DON'T THINK WE'LL MISS THEM TOO MUCH, LIKE COMPULSORY FIGURES IN SINGLES SKATING. THE TWO PROGRAMS ABSORBED THE THIRD. DONUT PANIC, EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY IN THE END.
YUP, COMPULSORY WAS NICE BUT YOU CAN ONLY WATH THE SAME THING SO MANY TIMES BEFORE IT GETS BORING. AND IT'S NOT LIKE THEY CAN'T CHANGE THE RULES AGAIN NEXT YEAR IF THIS TURNS OUT TO BE A TOTAL DISASTUH.
