OMG. He was in the closet back then about his skating. Dude has issues. IMHO, anyway. Dang.

Well, maybe he was embarrassed about his classmates finding out and laughing at him for doing such a "fag sport". I knew a guy who dropped figure skating because he couldn't take all the bullying and teasing anymore :x

He was skating from age eight on though. I wonder how he explained his absences for all of his competitions?

The only explanation is that he didn't have close friends who cared enough to ask, I guess ._.

...but I hope it's not that ;___;

what's a prom court? idk these american things <.<;

yeah, I don't think he was shunned too badly either, actually... I remember someone who went to the same high school as him and said that there was some teasing going on but nothing major. But that's all she said, so idek the details.

No, I know what a prom is, it was the court thing I had no idea about XDDD I've seen a few high school movies and series, but I thought they like, exaggerated real life or something xD;; I mean, it seems such a big (and expensive) deal, in movies :o

I guess it's a thing just for the... elite students or sth, then? The rich and popular ones? cause my parents sure would've killed me if I tried to spend $300 on a dress xDD;;

Almost everyone goes to prom. I went to a huge inner-city high school, and we don't have lockers, homecomings, cheerleaders or any classic American high school stuff, but we had a prom (for seniors). It was a huge event. And you need to buy tickets for them. It's one of these things most American girls are spending a lot of money on (sweet 16, prom, graduation dresses, weddings...)

IDK about their school, but our school has a tradition of electing the people everyone hates onto prom court. It's a bit sad, but if you're on, everybody prolly thinks you're really annoying.

Of course that's why! I understand that! I just find it really disturbing and self-loathing, etc, etc. It also seems to fit in with everything about him during the Olympics and after that I've read.

Well, if that's the reason why he used to hide it, I don't think it's that disturbing... or necessarily self-loathing. Given how people can make your life hell for it, maybe it was (and maybe still is) more out of self-preservation than anything. There are so many gays in figure skating, but not even the most flamboyant ones *coughs* are "out" in the official sense of the word.
