Overview: The Eurovision Song Contest brings together countries from within the European Broadcasting Union (therefore not always countries technically within Europe itself) to compete against each other through song and dance. The contest is notoriously silly, campy and utterly over the top to the point of embarrassment. The songs are generally terrible but in the best way. The costumes are skimpy and bizarre. The voting is done by the public (and, in recent years, also a set of anonymous judges) and is always political and unrelated to the quality (or lack thereof) of the songs completely.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW IN A NUTSHELL
- Most of Europe does not take the contest very seriously and it is ridiculed in the majority of the continent
- Ireland have the record of most wins (seven, three consecutive) with France, Luxembourg and the UK in second (five)
- pity those who receive the dreaded "nul points" - which has happened to Norway, Finland, Turkey, Austria, Iceland, Lithuania, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom in the past
- you can thank Eurovision for ABBA
- Céline Dion won for Switzerland once
- Portugal has been participating the longest and never won
- Eastern European countries are now the major force compared to past decades due to being "new" Eurovision entrants and, in some cases, new countries completely
- Every year from 2001 to 2008 resulted in a country winning for the first time, see above
- The past winner was Alexander Rybak of Norway with a record-breaking 387 points, 95 points ahead of the previous record holder, Lordi, in 2007. Rybak will be the opening act for the final on Saturday.
- OUR VERY OWN EVGENI PLUSHENKO WAS PART OF THE WINNING ACT IN 2008 ALONGSIDE SINGER DIMA BILAN AND HARDCORE VIOLINIST & PROFESSIONAL BROMEISTER EDVIN MARTON
