Just in case some peoplel aren't aware of this: the deadline for withdrawal after the team event (which ended on Sunday night), so that a replacement can be made, is 10 AM on Monday morning. And the more concrete details ("why other skater did not skate"), which he did not go into, was that apparently they did try to contact Kovtun, but somehow he was out of contact/ill/not ready. Plushenko mentioned this in another interview in the Russian press. Valentin Piseyev, general director of the FFKKR, confirmed it in another interview ( ... )

I still can't understand why Kovtun was not ready. Anyone whose in skating expected this!

Maybe it was a FU to his federation for replacing him with Plushy?

YEP. He's a little brat and I hope he never represents Russia in an Olympics.

The "insiders" from Kovtun's side say that he had been expecting the call the whole time the change was legal, i.e. till the 10.02.2014.

P. S. Plushy remembered last years Worlds wrong here. At the 2013 worlds, there was only one Russian men's singles entry--Kovtun, who came in 17th. (He was probably thinking also about the year before that, when Gachinsky came in 14th or thereabouts...)

also of course he can't make pointed remarks about gay rights on cnn with putin breathing down his shoulder and as a public official (is he still? can't remember). i don't blame him for playing it safe

ughh that interviewer really annoys me

So much credit to him for not hopping on the bandwagon when a lot of Russian athletes have been publicly anti-gay.

He backtracked from this. He said he was misunderstood, because of his English not being perfect.
