This is a lot of bullshit. The bottom line is that all these Russians quoted here are more concerned about winning a fucking medal than they are about understanding the decision of someone who has been in extreme pain for over a year but has continued to train to compete at the Sochi Olympics. I love Yags but I don't see HIM out here at the games. He's only 33 - just two years older than Plushy so he can shut right up. Plushenko's right about himself - he's not a robot and there's only so far a person can go. I don't think this was deliberately staged; he has more respect for his country than that. And honestly I'd rather him not skate than collapse halfway through the program anyway.
I'm also really angry that one cow had the gall to accuse Yana of "orchestrating" his pull-out. YANA is the reason he skated in Vancouver at all! >:( Her support is why he kept going! And that's in strong contrast to Masha, who probably didn't care about him at all when he was prepping for Torino. I don't remember hearing about her back then. Jeeze...
It's a sad day when NBC treats Plushenko better than his own country's media.
Kovtun wasn't ready to go when there was still time to pull out, though. It was Plushenko or no one. (And there has never been a "rightfully belonging" Olympic spot just for winning Russian Nationals.)
It wasn't "last minute." He knew when the deadline was. He should have been practicing. Google skaters who've stepped in before the withdrawal deadline in previous figure skating competitions, including Olympics. There have been several. He didn't want to compete because he was sulking.
Then you're unbelievably paranoid, if you think he'd fall in practice on purpose and risk paralysis. He would have withdrawn earlier if that had been his aim. Do you also believe that we didn't land on the moon?
Uh, no, there are actual news reports that Kovtun refused to go when he WOULD have had time to practice. Where is your source for Plushenko not intending to go beyond the team event?
So do a lot of figure skaters. There's a difference between being a sore loser and orchestrating some conspiracy.
Yes, because he'd hurt himself in practice the day before and hadn't done any jumps that morning. Did you actually listen to the broadcasts on NBC? None of those people interviewed accused him of FAKING anything. Do you think the screws in his back are faked too?
There's nothing wrong with speculating that he'd withdraw after the team event. He considered it. Kovtun wasn't ready. But the idea that he faked a re-injury when he could have just withdrawn by phone? THAT is delusional. THAT is paranoid.
Yeah the idea that someone who's had 13 surgeries would need to fake an injury is kind of preposterous. Most people with 13 surgeries would have a hard time walking to the fridge.
He's been doing this for so long, he must've known the backlash he was setting himself up for by going out this way. It doesn't seem like something anyone would do unless it was an absolute last resort.
Kovtun was officially listed as the first alternate men's singles skater on the Russian Olympic team. As such, he had a responsibility to be ready if he was called. Or if he was physically unable, to let the Russian team officials know.
