TL;DR Worlds write up

Mar 19, 2013 20:31

Since some of you actually wanted a write up, so here's my pathetic attempt at doing one. I missed Monday and Tuesday practice, but roses_are_roses wrote up a nice summary for you guys already. I’m just throwing some random thoughts about individual skaters/teams who made an impression.

Warning: massive amounts of personal opinions and feels ahead.

Pairs
Pairs and Ladies were the best competitions where almost everyone did well.

Scimeca/Knierim stood out in the early flights. They are a very artistic team, and both the LP and SP were excellent. Add some difficulty and I can see them as a top 5 team in the future.

Another interesting pair was James/Cipres, mostly because of how incredibly athletic Vanessa James is. She was getting more height on the jumps than Morgan. She should be lifting and throwing him XD.

Poor team china was a bit of a disaster. Pang/Tong did their best, but you could tell he was really struggling with age/injuries. Wenjing Sui hurt her leg on the last throw in their LP, poor BB. Cheng Peng looked really young (especially next to Hao Zhang who is huge for a figure skater) and very inexperienced. She made silly mistakes like reaching for and missing his hand, and she ran into him during footwork in the SP .

My fav pairs SP was from Kavagutchi/Smirnov. It was beautiful, they showcased so many classic Russian qualities. What was that about them being un-artistic? I can’t hear you over their fabulousness. I was sad about their mistake in the LP. His blade hit the boards and he nearly dropped her on the front row audiences O.O.  I want them to podium again so badly.

I wanted to #delete Savencheko/Szolkowy’s performances. :infinite creys: They were terrible programs too, pls bring something better next year.

The Canadians were on fire, they absorbed the energy of the crowd and all had the skate of their lives. Moore-towers/Moscovitch’s LP was one of my favs, and I was a little disappointed they didn’t get on the podium. I kept on running into Dylan in the arena and the food market. He heard me saying his name once and smiled and waved :D.

I think everyone saw Volosozhar/Trankov’s fantastic LP performance (if you didn’t go watch NOW). They’ve improved a lot since I saw them at Skate Canada last season. Of course Max had to headcase at least once. Jbutt (who did the winner’s interview) joked at least his fall was graceful lol. They are the team to beat heading to Sochi. V/T are sooo adorable together, Max was giving Tatiana piggyback rides during gala practice :DDD.

Dance
Dance was ok, I found the short dance rather boring. It’s the discipline I’m least knowledgeably about, and after 40 Finnish steps, they all start looking the same xD. That’s the problem with worlds, there are so many skaters, and a lot from weak skating countries. They really got to do away with the 3 per country rule.

Sad for the French, I honestly didn't think their FD was that bad that they placed 7th. Fabian stormed out of the K&C after their marks were announced, and they didn't attend the gala even though they were invited.

The Bobrova/Soloviev’s FD made the entire audience go WTF?? Was it really suppose to be zombies? I thought they were really over marked. Russian score inflation icu.

I wasn’t very impressed by Voir’s Carmen. Scott actually roared when they kicked their legs out at the beginning of the FD, It was so ridiculously melodramatic the crowd around me broke into giggles. Their speed wasn't great and they were off the music at times. Marlie was pretty great, incredible speed and athleticism.

Men’s
Men’s was an unmitigated disaster I wish I can #delete. I was too busy being sad face over team japan, so I don’t have too much to say here…

Viktor Pfeifer, Peter Liebers, and Misha Ge stood out in the earlier flights with very interesting programs. Misha is adorable, we kept on running into him too xD. Also, I saw Viktor with his girlfriend, I wonder if he lives/trains in Canada?

Oh Brian. How do I describe Brian. He’s is incredibly charismatic performer who is always performing for the audience. And so very hot. He better become a show skater after he retires.

#D10IsOurSaviour. That’s all.

Ladies
As always, I’m waaay too emotionally invested in the ladies. WHY MUST YOU GIVE ME SO MANY FEELS??

Team Japan all had bad practices so I was ready to have a panic attack when the competition rolled around. Thank god for Kanako, she was the brightest spot in the ladies’ short. That performance was absolutely magical, standing ovation from the entire crowd. BB just fix your URs and flutz and you’d be perfect. May I also say she is the SWEETEST AND MOST ADORABLE CHILD. She smiled at me when she gave me an autograph and I almost melted into a puddle of goo from the cuteness. During gala practice, she wanted to sign autographs for the fans even though her assistant coach was telling her to get back to practice, but she didn’t want to disappoint her fans so she’s like one more! one more!. And she was taking good care of Mao too. bb you are too perfect, I can’t.  Srsly judging you if you don't like this girl.

Mao… why must I stan skaters who can’t jump??? After she did the 3A and combo in the SP, I was like ok I can breathe now, and then she pops the loop HER BEST JUMP. She definitely wasn't at her best , skating very slowly in the SP and very tense and high in the knee in the LP, but she had wonderful carriage and dance lines. She is definitely more than the jumps, her skating by itself is beautiful. I've always thought of her as cute, but she is also very very pretty in person.

I found myself liking a lot of ladies who I never enjoyed on TV. Carolina Kostner is very fast with great skating skills, Gracie Gold has enormous jumps so her lack of artistry wasn’t as noticeable, and Katelyn Osmond has immense charisma (hope for Canadian ladies!).

The real surprise of the competition for me was Li Zijun. She skate softly with great poise and musicality like Mao, and has speed and good jump technique like Yuna. Basically all the great qualities of those two rolled into one, can we call her mini-maona?

Yuuunaaa. I’ve flip-flopped on her a lot over the years and there were times when I actively disliked her. But I think I’ve become a stan. Her lp was one of, if not the greatest, performance of her career. She’s a beast on the ice, incredible speed and flying jumps. I still don’t think she’s artistically on par with Mao (lol-ing at the 10 one of the judges gave her for interpretation), but she’s so dynamic when she skates you barely notice. Off-ice, she’s like a moody little boy, It’s adorkable :DDD,  lone wolf who doesn’t show much emotion. I loved her gala program, I thought it showed off her real personality. More Yuna in suit and tie pls. The audience was perplexed by the cross dressing lol.

Overall was a fun experience even though I was an emotional mess through large parts of it haha.  Shout out to roses_are_roses, it wouldn't have been nearly as fun without her stanning with me :D.  Also,  my parents were converted into fans and they want to go again... so anyone up for Shanghai 2015?  See you guys there ;)
