American figure skating film RISE available for purchase in late October

Figure skating fans throughout the country were all atwitter upon learning Wednesday that the historic figure skating film, RISE, will reach American televisions in late October, so you can imagine the delight when U.S. Figure Skating announced that a DVD and Blu-ray of the film will also be available for purchase next month.

This highly anticipated news comes nearly six months after rise1961.com announced via its Twitter “that RISE will be available on DVD and Blu-ray starting in the fall of 2011.”

RISE, which shares the rise and fall of American figure skating following the crash of Sabena Flight 548 that killed the 1961 U.S. World Figure Skating Team, was screened in more than 500 movie theaters throughout the county in a one-night only event on February 17, 2011.

Now thanks to the DVD and Blu-ray release, which includes an additional DVD featuring several special highlights like the 1961 television broadcast of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships that took place just 17 days before the 1961 U.S. World Figure Skating Team was killed, figure skating fans everywhere will be able to relive the triumphs of American figure skating that forever changed the sport.

The DVD and Blu-ray release falls on the same day as the film’s 7:30 PM nationwide television premier on VERSUS.

A portion of proceeds from DVD and Blu-ray sales of RISE will go directly to the U.S. Figure Skating Memorial Fund, which provides financial assistance to U.S. figure skaters as a tribute to the members of the 1961 U.S. World Team.
