Johnny Weir’s taking a year off from figure skating to build his empire. There’s the LOGO reality show, Be Good Johnny Weir, his new fashion line and now a new role as the face of MAC Cosmetics.
Weir will lend his mug to the brand’s holiday collection, appropriately dubbed
GLITTER AND ICE,
hitting stores at the end of fall. The Post reports that Weir shot the campaign in Miami in early June.
Given MAC’s previous male faces-Elton John and RuPaul-it’s safe to say the makeup brand looks for one thing in a man: a love of MAC. The two of them, and Weir, regularly use MAC on tour and on stage and come with very loyal followings, but it’s still unusual to sell women cosmetics via men. Are there other men you’d trust to sell you lipstick?

Johnny Weir, the famously flamboyant Olympic skater, is joining the likes of Nikki Minaj, Dita Von Tesse and Fergie as MAC Cosmetics’ newest face. Weir just wrapped the Miami photo shoot for the brand’s holiday 2011 line, appropriately named Glitter and Ice.
Though the Olympic Games were so last year, its hard to forget the figure skater and his outrageous outfits that rocked both the fashion and sports worlds. He skated to Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’ at nationals, wore sequins and feathers on and off the ice, and was sent death threats over his excessive use of fur in his skating costumes.
Weir has been taking this year off from skating to shoot the MAC campaign in Miami and work on his upcoming dress line. He’s also filming a reality show entitled “Be Good Johnny Weir”. Judging by his past TV appearances, we bet it’ll be pretty entertaining.
Hiring Weir is definitely a controversial move for MAC. Any man modeling makeup targeted at women is a little out of the ordinary, but considering Weir wears more makeup on ice than your average woman on any given day, he seems like the perfect fit. And he’s not the first - Elton John and RuPaul have posed as faces of MAC in years past.
We think the ads will be a hit. MAC is known for its outrageous ads and past campaigns with Lil’ Kim and Lady Gaga have been testaments to that. Weir is a longtime fan of the brand and known for his wild eye for beauty. Plus, he’s kind of the reigning expert on both glitter and ice.
