STEPHANE TIME
All this week Stephane has been doing a daily mini interviews on RSR about pieces of music that are particulalry important to him (sometimes he sings as well). I've rounded them all up here for anyone that's missed them, and also tried to translate what he says about each piece,
Vivaldi and Michael Jackson
http://www.rsr.ch/#/la-1ere/programmes/mp3/?date=23-05-2011 Excerpt from "The Seasons" by Vivaldi, "Winter"
Stephane: "Four Seasons" by Vivaldi, "Winter", performed by Nigel Kennedy. It reminds me of a lots of things, many things from my childhood. In fact, my sister skated to "Four Seasons" when she was younger. And a few years later, a bit as a tribute to my sister, I wanted to use this pieve for the Olympic Games in Turin. But it was she who skated to the music before me.
Moderator: What image do you see of your sister when you hear this music?
Stephen: The same person that I see when I think of her today: someone who is a perfectionist, a hard worker who loves to try, who is passionate. When I hear this music, I really see her character and mine too. We are different, but very similar in nature. There is a sort of reprise every time, this power in the music, and especially in the arrangement by Nigel Kennedy - it has a lot of aggression in this music, but at the same time, and gentleness, sensitivity - like there is in both my sister and me.
Michael Jackson, "Bad"
Interviewer: Speaking of a perfectionist ...
Stephane: A great performer, I think, perhaps the greatest: Michael Jackson. He inspired me when I was younger. And I remember how in my living room I listened to "Bad" on a loop and invented my own choreography, not necessarily in the style of Michael Jackson. I jumped in the air, threw myself on the floor directly to my knees. My mum was a little afraid for my poor knees. But hey, it was my style, I danced in my living room or in my garage, inventing new things. And Michael really inspired me.
Interviewer: Choreography without skates?.
Stephane: Choreography without skates, but with socks, which were very slippery, it was almost figure skating on the tile floor.
Sia and Adele
http://www.rsr.ch/#/la-1ere/programmes/mp3/?date=24-05-2011 Sia "Breathe Me"
Stephane: First of all, Sia with a song titled "Breathe Me", which I discovered thanks to a girl who sang at a skating show in Japan. She told me about this singer, she told me: "You must listen to it. I'm sure you'll like her style of singing, it's sensitivity, it will suit your skating. So I listened to this song, "Breathe Me", and immediately felt something so deep. And she became one of my favorite singers. I love to listen in to her the car, screaming, being able to sing very loudly.
Adele "Someone like you"
Stephane: Adele - very similar, she's also a singer with an incredible voice. Sometimes she seems to be almost a tragic figure, but at the same time - very nice. And I like the chorus where there is a sense of hope. It is true that love - sometimes it all goes well, but sometimes it's very painful, and that's what she is singing about in this song "Someone liek you".
Interviewer: This is something that you sing often?
Stephane: "Someone like you", I sing it several times a day I think, during training, and the plane on the way to Asia, Russia or some other part of the world. She's on every play-list on my MP3 player.
MGMT & Radiohead
http://www.rsr.ch/#/la-1ere/programmes/mp3/?date=25-05-2011 MGMT "Kids"
Stephen: We're listening to MGMT, a song called "Kids". It reminds me of their concert, which I had the opportunity to see and the energy there, which I really enjoyed. The song is called "Kids", and it's really about the freshness of childhood. I would like to remain a child ... When I hear this song, it's like I am back teetering on the brink of adolesence. I hate routine, and I still love to learn, I want to discover new things - And when I hear this song, I say to myself: Do not stop trying to do new things, because it's so good.
Interviewer: Where was this concert?
Stephane: It was in Zurich, what was it called... I think it was Maag Halle ... It's not a typical venue for a concert, I don't remember why it was there, I saw a tango show near there once, but this was a real rock concert, there were lots of young people, I think I was one of the oldest there.
Radiohead "Nude"
Stephane: So, in another concert, with a similar atmosphere, but there were a lot more people. It was the summer of two thousand ... two thousand and eight, next to New York when I was training in New Jersey. At the weekend I had the opportunity to go to this concert, it was a festival in the open air, near to the Statue of Liberty. And it was in-cred-i-ble. The sound was amazing, filling the whole sky, and there were so many people, I do not know how many thousands of people, but it was incredible.
Interviewer: This music is much more calm. Almost depressing.
Stephane: Yes, it's the typical style of Radiohead. With a very good rhythm, they have a very subtle style combining this depressing voice, with the percussion, with this rhythm, which changes all the time. I think it is well suited to the end of the party, when you need to calm down and relax a little.
Jacques Brel & Paolo Nutini
http://www.rsr.ch/#/la-1ere/programmes/mp3/?date=26-05-2011 Stephane: This is the great Jacques Brel with the song Ne Me Quitte Pas, which I've skated to in galas.
It really was very difficult to say: "That's that, I've turned the page from my competitive career," and begin a new chapter as a show skater. This song became a kind of transition between the world of competition where there is a clearly marked goal with everyday training, and there was the World Championships at a set date and I would do everything to work towards it, design my schedule so I would peak at that point, and then moving to something [shows] less rigid, where you have to set your own goals.
And so, "Ne me quitte pas" - it's to the ice in general. The ice, my health... there were moments when I wondered: was it worth so much effort, to end up with so many injuries. So this song really marked the transition to something new, the world of theater, a world of artistry, which opened my eyes, where I managed to find some answers to these questions.
Thank you Jacques Brel, for making such a beautiful song.
Paolo Nutini "Rewind"
Stephane: Another artist in a completely different style to Jacques Brel. Paolo Nutini, he's got more of a "rock" voice. I managed to see him play at the Montreux Jazz festival and he played and sang with his eyes closed and was completely immersed in his world, was entirely within the music. I think if I had the opportunity to attend a concert by Jacques Brel, it would be the same sort of thing, being drawn in as I was seeing Paolo Nutini.
I was fortunate to meet him in the backstage and on and I was impressed with this guy who had a voice ... but who gave so much. And I really love it. and I love it, I love it when on stage during a concert artist gives all that he has.
Britney & Whitney
http://www.rsr.ch/#/la-1ere/programmes/mp3/?date=27-05-2011 Stephane: So we're listening to something a little strange - the phenomenon of Britney Spears. She is just a normal person, and she managed to touch so many people. And that's what makes her incredible; a young girl, blond, short, and she didn't really know how to sing, and but even so she's more than just the music.
Interviewer: And it has lasted.
Stephen: Yes, it has lasted. It's in her seventh albums just as it was in the previous ones. There is something in her which is more than just the fame, the celebrity, there are so many other singers at this level, but she keeps on surprising us. I love to dance to this song "I'm a Slave 4 U": in club, or even at home in front of a mirror. For me it's fun, easy music, it doesn't require you to think deeply about it. And I appreciate that, you don't always have to take things seriously, sometimes you just want to dance.
(Whitney Houston "The Greatest Love Of All")
Stephane sings along and then says "I don't really know the words!"
Interviewer: After Britney - Whitney?
Stephane: Yes, after dancing, singing. Usually I do with with my bff, we put on SingStar and sing our favorite song, "The Greatest Love Of All", singing along like fools... as Whitney Houston. Maybe we don't hit all the notes, but so much fun. Times like that make me very happy
Interviewer: You can sing now.
Stephane: To be honest, without the display it will be impossible. (Singing) I don't know the words very well - it's much easier when they are on the screen!
Interviewer: That was brave. Stephane Lambiel, figure skater and fan of karaoke~
