- Put a lot of pressure on himself in preparation, because the "door was open" with Evan and Johnny not competing.

- He was stressed out when he arrived, and it carried over into his short program, despite feeling good in practice. He "wasn't in the moment." It was "really disappointing."

- During his day off between the short and long programs, he talked to Evan for 10-15 minutes, and it helped to change his perspective and get focused again. Evan told him to focus on a few things he finds positive of his skating, which would help him focus and not over-analyze.

- After his skate, he had to get out of the building for a few minutes to get some air and call one of his coaches in Toronto who was watching on TV. He found out that everyone was skating clean after him and his heart sank, but he was glad to see the audience really enjoying everyone's skating once he went back inside.

- He says that a skater wants the audience to believe in them, to be validated as a top-level skater. Nationals is a big hurdle. It's a mind game.

- He's not as nervous going into 4CC, and he's not thinking about being the defending champion. His new process is to keep things simple and not over-complicate things in his head.

- The field at 4CC is different this year, since it's a non-Olympic year, but the field is still very deep. It's an important event for a lot of skaters, since it's the end of many of their season, except maybe for World Team Trophy.

- To kill time on the flights to Asia, he picks out a relatively short book he wants to read and reads the whole thing on the flight. It gives him a sense of accomplishment.
