Giant Wombat of the Day

Paleontologists in Queensland, Australia have discovered the nearly-complete skeleton of a giant wombat-like creature called a diprotodon.

The rhinoceros-sized marsupials lived 2.5 million years ago, and researchers say they became extinct 55,000 years ago due to climate change and the arrival of humans.

The tooth of a giant lizard called a goanna was also found with the bones, which probably explains how this particular diprotodon died.
