Washington Capitals news

Given that Karl Alzner and his (in)infamous dogs are the featured September picture on the 2012 Caps Canine Calendar, it seems only right that they welcome you in. Watch out, the room might've been trashed a bit.

It's been a fairly quiet week in Caps-land. In current Capitals news!

Matt Hendricks supports 'You Can Play' equality project. As you may remember, Matt Hendricks first announced his involvement with YCP back in May, along with ex-Cap Mike Knuble. We've been waiting for his video on the You Can Play website, and here it is.

John Carlson is a sharp-dressed man in Style Setters 2012: The Washingtonian’s Annual Homage To Fashion. The only thing he cuts closer than his suits is his wait on signing a contract. (No, he still hasn't signed a contract.) Given Carlson's previously rather casual attitude towards fashion one can only assume he did the shoot to make his defensive partner, Karl Alzner, gnash his teeth in jealousy.

If you want to know who's currently in DC and practicing? It includes Backstrom, Johansson, Chimera, Hendricks, Green, Carlson, Erskine, Neuvirth, Orlov, Galiev, Sjogren..

There's a rather conspicuous name missing there who actually has been around, but is just now leaving. In news of el capitan, after practicing in DC for the past couple weeks, Alexander Ovechkin has left for Moscow spend his birthday (September 17) with family and friends in Moscow. Given the likelihood of a lockout, this may be the last time Ovechkin is in DC for a while.

On September 15th, Ovechkin will be doing something else very important-- taking part in the Reebok CrossFit, which will include a soccer tournament and culminate with visiting the Children's Hospital, which treats children suffering from leukemia and other blood disorders, to give out gifts to the children.

In addition, he does plan to play in the KHL if a lockout occurs, though whether that's with his home club of Dynamo or somewhere else is yet to be determined.

In Capitals prospects news! (Where actual hockey is getting played...)

Don’t look now, but wayward Capital Evgeny Kuzetsov has started the 2012-13 KHL season with two goals in two games.

As the article points out, though, Kuznetsov's first goal of the season had a much better celebration attached to it-- doing pushups on the ice. Though will anything ever beat the kayak?

Whalers' Connor Carrick fitting in with new team. Carrick was a fifth round pick in the 2012 draft. In the Plymouth Whalers’ 5-3 win in Windsor on Monday, he assisted on a goal with Ryan Hartman.

In Capitals alumnae news!

Langway trade still resonates in DC thirty years later. While not exactly current news, it's worth noting that without the Rod Langway trade thirty years ago, there's a good chance the Capitals wouldn't even be around today and this post wouldn't exist. Thanks, Mr. Secretary of Defense.

What has Alan May been up to? Serving as a guest analyst on the Marek vs. Wyshynski Puck Daddy podcast. Also, squabbling with Craig Laughlin both in person and on Twitter, who is in turn recovering from hip replacement surgery. You can follow both of them (and their good-natured swipes at each other) at MayHockeyCSN and Laughlin18.

Though it's not team news, an inspiring human interest story about how a very small fan proves that not all fighters carry hockey sticks. Come on, with the impending lockout, we could all use a story with a happy ending that involves unbearably cute kids dressed in tiny jerseys. And if nothing else, the article proves that the mildly disquieting NHL Bleacher Creatures do have some use. D'aww.

And finally in conclusion, the Capitals remember Ace Bailey who died on one of the 9/11 flights. Raise a glass to his memory, and to Bruce Boudreau, who just missed being on one of the flights, and to everyone else who was affected by the events that happened.
