Newt Gingrich defends Akin on Meet the Press

Todd Akin has found a new defender: former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.

On this morning's "Meet the Press" on NBC, Gingrich said: "I think Todd Akin was the choice of the people of Missouri, and Todd Akin has publicly apologized."

Akin was virtually abandoned by almost every establishment Republican after controversial comments on rape and abortion. But he has stayed in Missouri's U.S. Senate race and appears to be finding a footing.

Last week, longtime Gingrich aide Rick Tyler joined Akin's campaign. Gingrich told NBC's Tom Brokaw that he hasn't personally spoken with Akin.

Gingrich also commented on a joke made by Karl Rove where the GOP strategist said that if Akin were "found mysteriously murdered, don't look for my whereabouts." (Rove has personally apologized to Akin. Akin accepted.)

"Karl Rove said some terrible things on Friday for which he has apologized, which should remind us, people make mistakes," Gingrich said on the venerable Sunday morning program. "In the age of Gabby Giffords, it is not a joke to say that a member of Congress ought to get murdered."
