[note: NASA's annual budget is $18.4b]

Yeah, but this country doesn't have a space exploration-industrial complex. =\

I wish we had a space exploration-industrial complex!

No kidding. Even without one though, the amount of money spent on space exploration is a pittance compared to the budget or the amount of debt we've accumulated over the decades. And we've reaped so many rewards from NASA and space exploration related research over the years. Sigh.

Thank you, and tell this to my friend! He feels NASA is a waste of time and we should use the money being funneled into NASA to "help the economy" but when I mention the military's budget he goes, "I think that's stupid too" and I just want to punch him for being obtuse and not being able to discern between the usefulness of what we're spending on NASA vs our military.

Show him this then: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/1752963/Top-25-things-NASA-has-done-National-Aeronautics-And-Space-Administration-celebrates-50th-anniversary.html

There's also a couple of rants about NASA's budget vs the military's or the country in general from Neil deGrasse Tyson, but I don't have any of the links handy.

If NASA had recieved even half the budget that the military has got over the last thirty years or so we'd have a permanent base on Mars by now.
