A Spanish doctor has been ordered to pay for the upkeep of a child after a failed abortion operation meant the boy's mother was obliged to see her pregnancy through to the end.

While I think the doctor should be held accountable, this punishment (damages + upkeep of a child) is way over the top. Who would even want to go into the profession with those kind of risks? So, I hope he wins the appeal and gets that reduced somehow.

Perhaps the country could allow late-term abortions if the first procedure is unsuccessful, or the "state" should care for the child (or put it up for adoption) once it's born.

I don't think that many doctors would make the sort of idiotic mistake that he did, though. They make it sound like it was pretty much his negligence at the check up that meant that he missed that she was still pregnant.

Her life has been irrevocably changed because of his error. I'm not sure why you think that 'the state' should have to pay for it?

Idk, I think there need to be consequences for this sort of thing. Otherwise people are careless.

This is not the norm though. As a Scot living in Spain I can tell you the social health care here is very good. Looks like this guy has been made an example of to be honest and I´m ok with that.

This. I've always received excellent healthcare in Spain and I'm pretty sure their healthcare system is ranked above the British NHS. I love both systems, but I just feel like I received a bit more attention in Catalunya when I've needed investigations.
