When Obama made that announcement, it looked like a quick Repub reaction was to hope it would cost him black voters. Since then, there've been several black celebs--Jay Z + Ice Cube + TI--speaking out for marriage equality and now this.

Is this thought to be happening with November in mind? Is it organized?

I would think it's more an issue of no one really asking black citizens. It's just presumed they're/we're inherently "more homophobic" than privilege hetero white dudes in heteronoremative power.

It's really a combo of older folk being more socially conservative and young cats being immersed in the hyper-macho hip-hop culture... and not enough news organizations noting that neither group do not speaks for the majority, let alone all. of blacks.

ETA: And even among those older blacks who think homosexuality is wrong/a sin, most take the view of "I may not approve, but I don't have the right to tell you you can't."

That's another thing (re: your ETA) -- black conservatives, except for the bizarre fox news and tea party varieties, tend not to be so-called "social" conservatives/"culture warrior" types, which seems to be an ideological preoccupation among privileged conservatives that dont have enough real daily stressers in their lives (racism, sexism, classism, etc).

With that much unobstructed navel-gazing voids to fill, you make up "counter-crusades" for shit like "defending Christmas". But not even mainstream black conservatives are that bored; even they have to deal with certain strains of marginalization. Doesnt mean that differently-marginalized groups are incapable of bigotry/marginalizing people outside of their oppressive experiences, but "live and let live" is kinda a vital point to the topic.

Well, maybe this will shut up the "black people are homophobes!" thing, since so many white people think the NAACP is a forum that every black person meets at to vote on What We All Believe(TM).

IKR?? We only get back like 40% of the ballots anyway. Oh yeah, Jesse wants to know if you'll bring the potato salad for next month...
