'Birth tourism' may change citizenship rules
Canada, U.S. only developed countries that grant automatic citizenship to babies born on their soil

The Harper government is considering changes to the citizenship rules to target so-called birth tourism - where a foreign national comes to Canada to give birth so the baby can get Canadian citizenship.

We MUST do this. Of course it makes sense.

Because OF COURSE we must protect against the majority of immigrants who are out to rob us blind of our jobs, our wonderful and incredibly generous social programs *choke* *splutter* *cough*, and even our daughters. (I mean, if we're not careful, those often *darker-skinned people* will even marry and reproduce with us.)

/end rant where I try to replicate and describe the mindset of the right-wing, racist, homophobic, sexist, a**holes currently ruling our country.

I'm so ashamed of being a Canadian right now, I can't even tell you.

(I also personally want to apologize to everyone in the world who is not a Canadian citizen and say that not all of us share these opinions where immigrants are concerned. I'm however sorry to say this seems to be a popular opinion at the moment.)

Thank you. As an immigrant who is in the process of being removed from Canada, it's good to hear. So many people (even Canadians!) seem to think the Canadian government is all fluffy bunnies and Dudley Doright and politeness, on all issues.

Oh my, that's terrible.

There are so many people who are either (i) never granted permission to stay here or (ii) have their status revoked at the moment that I can't process it. The reasons for this are quite often debatable at best and downright unfair at worst.

As an example there was a recent case involving a couple who had come to Canada from France (from the French island of Guadeloupe, actually)... They came with their daughter who has cerebral palsy and faced deportation because she would be a 'drain on Canadian taxpayers'. (They eventually won the right to stay -I expect this was at least partly because their case was publicized.)

The attitude of the government and the system is racist and treats most immigrants as thieves or worse. The exception? The people who arrive here with a lot of money. For people in this category, everything is fast-tracked and simplified.

This is so ridiculous. I've always been proud of the fact that people want to have their babies here so that they can have a better life. Where would I be if my grandparents and great grandparents hadn't done that?! I particularly like how they're trying to stop the immigration sponsorship program in Manitoba even though Manitoba needs it. Hello! I don't know if you've noticed but we need to bring people to live here. No one else wants to!

I agree! We also need immigrants here in Quebec -a lot!! As far as demographics are concerned, we aren't even replacing the population we have, since we have so few births.

Besides, immigrants (of all ages) benefit our society in so many tangible ways.

So even putting aside the ethical arguments regarding the rights of people who would wish to come here, there is absolutely no reason for this kind of thing. Heck, the last I heard, we don't even meet the targets set each year for the number of immigrants we want to accept! This makes absolutely no sense from so many points of view.

Another example of these disgusting tactics of Kenney and the Harper regime:
'Tories' sweeping immigration reforms target influx of claims from Roma gypsies', found here.

But Canada needs immigrants. A lot.

I agree that there are other ways of dealing with abuse of a system. And focussing on a small number of abuses rather than systemic problems is playing to xenophobia.

Agree with your comment.

Maybe people would be less inclined to find ways around the system if the system was not horribly broken?
